An interesting story but not a great history book. Three girls were sent to America to learn to be modern western style women and bring back western ideals of education for women. They return to Japan as young women, where they shape the ideas of Japanese women hood for the wealthy and privileged classes in different ways. Without proper citations I don‘t know how much is fact and how much is author opinion, so only 3 stars.

What an incredible story!!! We follow the extraordinary lives of three Japanese women sent as children in the United States to learn about the Western education system in order to be able somehow to transplant it in Japan upon their return 10 years later. It's a very interesting non-fiction!

A remarkable story, well-researched and written, that needed to be told and now needs to be read.

If they lived today, these highly intelligent women would be professors, not "the sister of a professor". However, the fact that they could become teachers was already an achievement.

Have started reading Daughters of the Samurai, an intriguing story.

Later I saw this shell on my walk and it reminded me of a butterfly.
