I picked up the consolidated version; Tom Swann bastard grandson of John of Gaunt has decided to try his hand as a mercenary at the end of the 100 year war. Captured by the French, Tom finds himself in the Mediterranean in a recently fallen Istanbul, travelling to Rhodes with the knights of St John, fighting galleys making enemy and friends. Very much in the style of Dorothy Dunnett.
