Underworld Underworld
Underworld Underworld | Burniat Mathieu
2 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Hades, God of the Underworld, is seeking a successor. The prize? His fabled horn of plenty, source of boundless wealth. But to winnow down the applicant pool, Hades has devised a series of challenges as deadly to hopefuls as they are enlightening to readers, taking us all on a tour of the soil: its uses and abuses, riches and resources. Beneath our feet lies a world teeming with life, whose fate is intimately tied with our own. In this fantasy adventure Mathieu Burniat deftly blends pop science and mythology to educate and enthrall on a topic vital to our troubled times.

This is a great example of what a graphic novel can do - a clever & engaging read as educational as it is entertaining. Despite the presence of Hades it is more ecological than mythological - it is a journey through the literal underworld of soil. I'm not a huge fan of the artwork (Tom's pupil-less eyes freaked me out a little) but the message is delivered effectively, the information meticulously researched. Who knew soil was so fascinating?!

readingjedi I also loved the way Hades was presented - a perma-grinning, muscle-bound jerk! The contrast between the mythological Underworld being the land of the Dead and the actual underworld of the soil teeming with life was nice as well. 2y
