What If We Were Somewhere Else
What If We Were Somewhere Else | Wendy J. Fox
4 posts | 1 read
What If We Were Somewhere Else is the question everyone asks in these linked stories as they try to figure out how to move on from job losses, broken relationships, and fractured families. Following the employees of a nameless corporation and their loved ones, these stories examine the connections they forge and the choices they make as they try to make their lives mean something in the soulless, unforgiving hollowness of corporate life. Looking hard at the families to which we are born and the families we make, What If We Were Somewhere Else asks its own questions about what it means to work, love, and age against the uncertain backdrop of modern America.

My sympathies go out to anyone who has found themselves in this position, especially those undergoing job interviews now. This quote is from “More Terrible Ways to Make a Living”, the final story in this superb book of intertwined short stories.

TrishB I would love someone to ask me that at the end of an interview! 2y

This line from a story entitled “Pivot, Feather” cracks me up. It reminds me of when one of my sons was a little kid, and we were playing “telephone”. “Can you hear me?” I asked him. “No”, he said. 😂

I‘m liking this book a lot. It was sent as an advance review copy by the publisher #SFWP. There are short stories about different people, but they‘re all connected in some way through an office in which they worked. I‘m eager to move through this maze of a book. I‘m sure I‘ll like the rest of it as I‘ve already read a novel by the author Wendy J. Fox.
