Aiding and Abetting
Aiding and Abetting: A Novel | Muriel Spark
3 posts | 6 read | 4 to read
In Aiding and Abetting, the doyenne of literary satire has written a wickedly amusing and subversive novel around the true-crime case of one of Englands most notorious uppercrust scoundrels and the aiders and abetters who kept him on the loose. When Lord Lucan walks into psychiatrist Hildegard Wolfs Paris office, there is one problem: she already has a patient who says hes Lucan, the fugitive murderer who bludgeoned his childrens nanny in a botched attempt to kill his wife. As Dr. Wolf sets about deciding which of her patients, if either, is the real Lucan, she finds herself in a fierce battle of wills and an exciting chase across Europe. For someone is deceiving someone, and it may be the good doctor, who, despite her unorthodox therapeutic method (she talks mainly about her own life), has a sinister past, too. Exhibiting Muriel Sparks boundless imagination and biting wit, Aiding and Abetting is a brisk, clever, and deliciously entertaining tale by one of Britains greatest living novelists. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

This novel is based on the 1974 real-life murder of Lord Lucan‘s nanny and Lucan‘s disappearance shortly thereafter. Spark imagines him reappearing 25 years later at the doorstep of a psychiatrist with a secret past. A whirlwind of a novel! Even though Spark‘s intro states that the book is based on Lord Lucan, I thought at 1st it was a fake intro if that makes sense. Fell into a rabbit hole about the real life case about halfway through novel!👇

ValerieAndBooks And now I know the model for the cover wasn‘t Freddie Mercury 😂 3y
Lynnsoprano Oh, but it certainly looks like Freddie! 3y
LeahBergen Great review! 👍🏻 3y

vivastory Thanks for tagging me! This sounds really intriguing me & I will def be adding it to my TBR. I'd like to eventually read all of Spark's works 3y
EvieBee Sounds fascinating!!! 3y
Ruthiella I read a book recently that referenced Lord Lucan too. One of those “stranger than fiction” situations. 3y
saresmoore Haha! Great review! 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano Hah, it definitely does 😂 3y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen Hope you enjoy this when you get to this from your TBR! 3y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory My goal, too! Did you get to all of Shirley Jackson, btw? 3y
ValerieAndBooks @EvieBee it is better appreciated when you know beforehand that Lord Lucan was a real person! 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Ruthiella Do you remember which book? Strange, but I had not heard of Lord Lucan until this novel. Interesting how there are so many theories on what happened to him. 3y
ValerieAndBooks @saresmoore 🙂 thanks. This novel wasn't what I expected it to be but I liked it! 3y
vivastory Not yet! Still working on it 3y
Ruthiella @ValerieAndBooks I‘ve been racking my brain trying to remember...it had something to do with the politician John Stonehouse who faked his death...but for the life of me, I cannot remember the book! 😫 3y
ValerieAndBooks @Ruthiella yes, when I was down the internet rabbit hole about Lord Lucan, Stonehouse was mentioned a few times. Because when they thought they had sighted Lucan, it was actually Stonehouse. Like you said, truth is stranger than fiction! 3y

Massive reorganization of my shelves caused several books being donated to the thrift shop. Was very good and only bought this (have several others already by Muriel Spark). My son said, “Is it about Queen?” 😂 I can totally see Freddie Mercury now.

vivastory I can def see Mercury 😂 One of my fave books of the yr has been a Muriel Spark. I really should read more of her work. 3y
LeahBergen Ha!! Now I can‘t unsee it! 3y
Ruthiella LOL Freddie! 😂 Spark books are so short, they hardly take up any room so no need to feel guilty! 😆 3y

DivineDiana I see it! 🙂 3y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory which book was it? I liked a couple of hers so much that I would pick up used copies whenever I saw them so I still have several TBR. But like @Ruthiella says, they‘re short enough that they don‘t take up much space while they wait to be read 😊 3y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen @divinediana @ruthiella @vivastory I will have to read it soon to see if anyone in it is anything like Freddie 😆 3y
vivastory It was a strange gem that I thought about for days 3y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory ooh, I have that one in the TBR! I'll plan on reading that one next of Spark's if you liked it so much. Just started Aiding and Abetting (pictured). I've read stories from her short story collection that I have, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (probably her best known), and The Driver's Seat. All pretty good 👍 . 3y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory oh just remembered I‘ve also read this other good one by Spark (so what will you pick for your next one by her 😉? ) 3y
vivastory Several people also recommended The Ballad of Peckham Rye after I read Loitering, so I think that will be the next one that I read. I have Prime of Ms Jean on my tbr shelves 3y
