'This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle' (William Shakespeare, King Richard II)The British monarchy is the one of the most iconic and enduring institutions in the world. It has weathered the storms of rebellion, revolution and war that brought many of Europe's royal families to an abrupt and bloody end. Its unique survival owes much to the fact that, for all its ancient traditions and protocol, the royal family has proved remarkably responsive to change, evolving to reflect the times. But for much of its history, it also spearheaded seismic change, shaping our religious, political and cultural identity and establishing the British monarchy as the envy of the world. There has never been a more apposite moment to consider the history of this extraordinary survivor. Within the next decade, there is likely to be a change of monarch, sparking renewed global interest on a scale not seen since Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. Even the media and popular frenzy evoked by recent royal events such as royal weddings and births will not compare to that generated by the accession of a new king. In the lead up to this pivotal moment in Britain's history, Crown & Sceptre explores the history and evolution of the monarchy from 1066 to the present day, feeding the renewed interest not just in the modern royals but in the predecessors who helped shape the institution into what it is today.

Well, wasn‘t planning on spending my NYE afternoon at the urgent care but here we are. 2 hour wait for my kiddo to be seen for an ear infection. Started complaining around 11 that his ear was a little sore and quickly devolved to nearly in tears pain 3 hours later. Thankfully had this book and another stacked on the island to read tonight so it was an easy grab out the door.

wanderinglynn Oh no! I hope y‘all get home soon & kiddo feels better soon. 2y

Starting this today - and first job - find the right bookmark! I though it would be easy and pulled out these flash cards but know I have the dilemma - do I change my bookmark for every chapter as we change monarch! 🤣

Tracy Borman is a curator at the a royal Palaces - so in a fab position to teach me all about my kings & queens! I‘m thinking 2022 might be the year of the chunkster for me 🧐

squirrelbrain Oh, I love her on the Tower of London TV programmes! (edited) 3y
Mitch @squirrelbrain I‘ve not see that🧐 3y
squirrelbrain I think it‘s on Channel 5 (but better than their normal fare!). It‘s quite interesting as it covers the modern day life within the Tower as well as historical aspects. There have been a few series… 3y

MamaGina This is the third time in the last two days this author has been brought to my attention—-I‘m thinking this is a sign from the book gods! 😆 3y
Mitch @squirrelbrain I‘ll have to find that. As a kid I spent a lot of after hours time in the Tower. My grandads friend worked and lived there! 3y
Mitch @MamaGina the book gods are tempting you for sure! 3y
squirrelbrain What a fascinating place to be as a child Mitch! I went to a black-tie do there a few years ago, but I‘ve never been as a tourist. 3y
