Our Little World
Our Little World: A Novel | Karen Winn
9 posts | 6 read | 5 to read
"I was intrigued by Our Little World from the chilling first paragraph. It's a coming-of-age novel complicated by a tragic and untimely death, and it's also a novel about two sisters you will never forget. I fell in love with the confidence of the writing and the colorful nostalgia of the mid-'80s details. Our Little World will transport and transfix you."Elin Hilderbrand July 1985. Its a normal, sweltering New Jersey summer for soon-to-be seventh grader Bee Kocsis. Her thoughts center only on sunny days spent at Deer Chase Lake, evenings chasing fireflies around her cul-de-sac with the neighborhood kids, and Max, the boy who just moved in across the street. That and the burgeoning worry that shell never be as special as her younger sister, Audrina, who seems to effortlessly dazzle wherever she goes. But when Maxs little sister, Sally, goes missing at the lake, Bees long-held illusion of stability is shattered in an instant. As the families in her close-knit community turn inward, suspicious, and protective, things in Bees own home become increasingly strained, most of all with Audrina, when a shameful secret surfaces. With everything changed, Bee and Audrinas already-fraught sisterhood is pushed to the limit as they grow upand apartin the wake of an innocence lost too soon. Perfect for readers of Celeste Ngs Everything I Never Told You, Our Little World is a powerful and lyrical coming-of-age story that examines the complicated bond of sisterhood, the corrosive power of envy, and how the traumas of our youths can shape our identities for a lifetime.

Mehso-so

#MoreMehThanYeah - I thought this was going to be special but in the end it was quite ordinary- just another coming of age story revolving around a set of sisters in the summer of 1985. As a young neighborhood girl goes missing, sisters Bee & Audrina come to realize their quiet little neighborhood isn‘t the safe haven they imagined. #BorrowNotBuy

Winn vividly captured the angst and awkwardness of adolescence, along with the cruelties and love shared within a bond between sisters. She managed to keep the story suspenseful with both the mystery and the dark hints of Audrina‘s looming fate. But the tale is driven more by the authentic drama it encapsulates than anything else. Readers are given morsels of wisdom tinged with remorse, as it was all hard won and delayed learning for Bee.

#BedSideBooks Just started the tagged book - set in the summer of 1985 - a quiet suburban neighborhood is shocked & terrified when a little 4 year old girl goes missing. It‘s a page-turner!!

A bit more of a coming of age story than I was expecting but a very solid debut novel. I thought it was well written and would definitely read more by Karen Winn. Thank you, NetGalley for the ARC to review and sorry it took me so long to get to it😊

It‘s the summer of ‘85 & four-year-old Sally goes missing. Everyone was there. Then… everything happens. Life. A town in turmoil. A family that isn‘t as together as it seems. Yup, Life. And it‘s all it should be - good, bad, and tragic. I love the simplicity of this book. It‘s a taut tale of life sprinkled with immense tragedy. Winn foreshadows it. The reader knows it‘s coming. And it still took me by surprise. 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆𝗠𝗮𝗴𝘀.𝗰𝗼𝗺

This is a coming of age story at it‘s core, but has a strong literary mystery. This is a powerful story that will give you a knot in your stomach as the story progresses. It can only be this way because of the way Winn makes you feel part of this family. I am not sure why I am not seeing this on must read lists, at least yet, but it definitely is in my opinion. Take a chance on this, I don‘t think you will regret it.
