Vinyl Junkies
Vinyl Junkies: Adventures in Record Collecting | Brett Milano
7 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Not too far away from the flea markets, dusty attics, cluttered used record stores and Ebay is the world of the vinyl junkies. Brett Milano dives deep into the piles of old vinyl to uncover the subculture of record collecting. A vinyl junkie is not the person who has a few old 45s shoved in the cuboard from their days in high school. Vinyl Junkies are the people who will travel over 3,000 miles to hear a rare b-side by a German band that has only recorded two songs since 1962, vinyl junkies are the people who own every copy of every record produced by the favorite artist from every pressing and printing in existance, vinyl junkies are the people who may just love that black plastic more than anything else in their lives. Brett Milano traveled the U.S. seeking out the most die-hard and fanatical collectors to capture all that it means to be a vinyl junkie. Includes interviews with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, Peter Buck from R.E.M and Robert Crumb, creator of Fritz the cat and many more underground comics.

What do you do with a four-thousand-dollar album? You play it. ‘Absolutely. I don‘t understand people who can buy really expensive records and never touch them. To me it‘s the same as having a first-edition book: you‘ve got an artifact from the time that it was made, and to me it‘s got a lot more presence. You‘re hearing it the way somebody would have heard it at the time, albeit on a much better stereo.‘

Happy National Vinyl Record Day! As someone who worked buying vinyl and CD's for 12 years, it's truly a day I celebrate! This flyer totally ages me!!! This book about vinyl obsessing should ring true to all you book fiends! Let me tell you- having both these obsessions leads to a mighty crowded house!

Mayread I saw KC about 20 years later. Larks tongue in aspic parts 1-🔁 8y
Mayread Also. Love vinyl. I collect. But the new thicker stuff does seem to have better sound/mix. 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @Skiles yes. Vinyl is amazing now! The industry went thru so many changes, quite rapidly. When I started buying, I was the 8-track buyer!😆 8y
Mayread @CherylDeFranceschi Now the audio fidelity on this might leave a little something to be desired. 😜 8y
