This by no means realistic historical fiction whodunnit takes place in 1920‘s India amidst British rule, a strict social hierarchy and emerging women‘s rights — yet remains mostly light hearted with charming characters and obstacles that are fairly easy to overcome. This was a light pick for me because while enjoyable, I thought it could have used more editing.

Downward-facing Penny + slightly blurry historical mystery. THE BANGALORE DETECTIVE CLUB‘s shorter chapters make the narrative a little abrupt in places, but it‘s more than worth seeking out for the way it explores 1920s Bangalore. There‘s a lot here about shifting attitudes towards colonial rule, caste divisions, and women‘s rights, and the characters are great. I‘ll definitely read the next book in the series.

The writing and plot were kind of simplistic but I really enjoyed the characters and learning about life in Bangalore in the 1920s. I plan to read the 2nd book in the series.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was a good mystery. I enjoyed the way the author wrapped in the details of the country, traditions and food. I liked all the characters. I look forward to reading the next one.

Sophie couldn‘t handle the excitement. 😄

I liked the mystery and characters, but the writing isn‘t that good. Still, I‘ll probably read the next one.

Written by an academic who has a couple of scholarly books to her credit, this first entry in what will be a series of mysteries was an engaging read. Set in 1921, where British rule in India is beginning to be challenged, we are introduced to Kaveri Mutrthy, a smart woman, and budding lady detective, who has the good fortune to be married to Ramu, a physician who supports his wife‘s dreams of a life beyond the usual confines imposed on her sex.

I'm excited to read more books in this series when/if they release, I haven't read a lot of mysteries set in India, so this was a nice change from the usual mysteries that I read. I liked the main character Kaveri, as she was smart, spunky, and adventurous. I liked the historical setting, as it was interesting to see a strong female character operated in a society in which women's roles were limited.

This is a cleverly written mystery and I just love Kaveri and Ramu. Going against all who dare tell her what she can and can‘t do, Kaveri intelligently and bravely works to solve a murder case. She gains the admiration of Ismail, the policeman on the case. And gains the love and respect of her husband, Ramu, who relishes having an educated wife. I look forward to more in this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
