The Hellbound Volume 1
The Hellbound Volume 1 | Yeon Sang-Ho
4 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Available for the first time in English! Experience the intense and heart-pounding horror of The Hellbound volume one by Yeon Sang-Ho, director of the internatonal hit and cult favorite film Train to Busan and cartoonist Choi Gyu-Seok, creator of the acclaimed webtoon Songgot. Fear and panic spread as a sinister phenomenon marks individuals for certain death. One day, you will receive a message from an unknown sender. The message will only include your name, the fact that you are going to hell, and the time you have left to live. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide--no escape. When the time counts down to zero, supernatural beings manifest to condemn you to hell. As the nation falls into unrest, a new religious sect begins to interpret the bizarre occurrence as the will of the divine. Could this be a sign of something grander--a blessing in disguise, a holy reckoning, or an evil curse? Amid social chaos and increasing hysteria, the people must find a way to survive this inexplicable terror.

Book 3 of #12booksof2023 was the 2 volumes that comprise Yeon Sang-Ho's Hellbound, read back-to-back the middle of February. Hellbound (now a Netflix series) has a life prior to being published in book format as an animated series. The animated series appears to have diverged quite a bit from later versions. The 2 volumes are a translation of the innovative webtoon about a world where people are dismembered in (cont.)

vivastory violent public demonstrations after receiving notifications. These 2 volumes have much to say about vigilante justice & truth in the era of social media. A story from the director of “Train To Busan,“ arguably one of the greatest zombie movie of the past 10 years. Hellbound is a series with a cinematic feel, great pacing & food for thought, @andrew65 4mo

A late #weeklyreport
Last week, from Super Bowl Sunday (Chiefs! 😃 🤘) through this past Saturday I read 4 graphic novels, a novella, 2 essay collections, a book on book cover design & a novel. Highlights of the week were Hellbound volumes 1 & 2. Also Carrere's essay collection 97,196 Words. Only disappointment of the week was Vaughan's Swamp Thing.

I came across this while browsing at the library a few days ago. I've had the show in my Netflix queue since it was released, but what intrigued me about the book was the blurb from Bong Joon-Ho & also seeing that it is written by Yeon Sang-Ho (director of Train to Busan AKA the best zombie movie of the past 10 years). I was immediately sucked in by the premise: police are investigating homicides. It turns out the victims are notified of their

vivastory deaths in advance & are then dispatched in a fairly gruesome manner. Weaponizing the post-truth of social media a religious cult arises, slowly gaining influence & power as the deaths (or demonstrations as they are soon labeled) continue. As the Screen Rant review says, “Featuring gorgeous, expressive and detailed art by Choi Gyuseok, it is a poignant commentary on the harmfulness of sensationalism and the contemporary societal obsession with 1y
vivastory dispensing quick and often undercooked ideas of justice.“ A conceptually unique story, with smart commentary & the bleak & grim atmosphere common in so much great South Korean cinema. 1y

I can appreciate the unique idea behind this plot.

It was a fast-paced read, due to the action and dialogue but also due to the fact that there was multiple pages with no dialogue - just the actions of the characters.

I felt that more should have happened in this volume, but I guess it's all set up for volume 2 and story continuation.

I think it's a decent first volume to a series and I'm interested to see where it goes from here.
