#MOvember This book is set in a #Future America, where males are an extinct species and harboring one is a grave criminal offense. So a young mother must do what she can to keep her son alive and hidden. This book is available April 2020.

vivastory I can't wait for this one, have you read Beukes? I loved Broken Monsters & Shining Girls. 1h
Cinfhen I read Shining Girls!! She‘s a dark writer so I‘m thinking this one is going to be a real hit or miss for me @vivastory I didn‘t love 1h
vivastory I have high hopes. Hopefully it works for you too! 1h

Kalalalatja The premise sounds really interesting, so I‘ll be looking forward to when reviews of it start popping up 1h
Megabooks So you picked a book about the future that comes out in the future? Damn, double hit!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 1h
TrishB I‘m looking forward to this one! 34m
Cinfhen HaHa!! Thanks for pointing out my awesomeness 😂😂 @Megabooks 34m
Cinfhen I agree @Kalalalatja this could potentially be a hit 🤞🏽🤞🏽lets hope @vivastory @TrishB (edited) 33m
BarbaraBB Sounds good. I‘ve never heard of this writer. 28m
vivastory @BarbaraBB Her book The Shining Girls is about a time traveling serial killer. I really liked it, but it didn't work for Cindy. 22m
BarbaraBB @vivastory Thanks. That sounds like a hit or miss to me! I‘ll have to find out! 18m

Up next / one for #NonfictionNovember and a cover that‘s calling to me. Five Days was gifted to me nearly 2 years ago from the lovely @Bklover & Speak No Evil was a gift from @Hooked_on_books ❣️❣️Excited to try both books, thanks friends 🙏🏼😘

Bklover ❤️❤️❤️ 13h
TheRiehlDeal I have Five Days at Memorial on my TBR. Let me know what you think of it! 12h
Samplergal I loved Five Days. 12h
See All 12 Comments
Cinfhen Will do @TheRiehlDeal I‘ve only read the first 50 pages and I‘m already seething @Samplergal I‘m thinking this would make for a great bookclub discussion 11h
Cinfhen 😘😘😘 @Bklover 11h
Hooked_on_books I liked both of these! I was in health care for many years before the 🌺 took over my life, so I had an interesting perspective going into that book. 10h
AlaMich I‘ve had Five Days on my Kindle for several years. I never seem to be able to work up the nerve to read it. 7h
Cinfhen It‘s daunting for sure @AlaMich but I can already tell im going to be hooked. I‘m trying not to make any judgements @Hooked_on_books because I‘m sure those 5 days were chaotic BUT.... the premise of what these doctors are considering is shocking 2h
arubabookwoman Although it‘s long, it‘s a page-turner. My three oldest children were born at Memorial (although it was then Southern Baptist Hospital). 2h
Cinfhen Oh wow @arubabookwoman was it difficult for you to read this book?? 2h
Hooked_on_books Certainly shocking. Some of their decisions I actually understand given the circumstances, but others were ethically and legally wrong, without question. I found it fairly simple to put myself in their shoes given my former profession. 2h
arubabookwoman The whole subject of Katrina is very difficult for me. We lived in NO for 18 years, and I have a deep love for the city, so the destruction & suffering of the city & its people was personal to me, even tho‘ we had moved several years before Katrina. I think the book presents the issues that arose at Memorial in a thoughtful & objective way. 2h

In Pieces | Sally Field
post image

This was such a powerful memoir. Sally shares so many pieces of herself, much more than I would have expected. My heart broke into pieces right along with Sally‘s. She shares intimate memories & experiences with raw intensity. I have so much respect for this Hollywood icon; a survivor and trailblazer. From Gidget to Mary Todd Lincoln to a Flying Nun Sally Field has had quite a colorful screen life while masking a dark childhood & beyond. **TW**

TheRiehlDeal Glad you liked it! ☺️ I have this on my TBR. For me, I know her most from Mrs. Doubtfire. 12h
Cinfhen This memoir was way darker than I was expecting but the audio narration read by Sally herself was so good @TheRiehlDeal I forgot she was in Mrs Doubtfire, I don‘t even think she mentions it or Steel Magnolias 🤔wait, I remember she does mention Steel Magnolias but I don‘t think she mentions Mrs. Doubtfire. And I don‘t recall her talking about Forest Gump🤷🏼‍♀️ (edited) 11h
Hooked_on_books This is the second review of this book I‘ve read that mentions her dark childhood. It puts a sad slant on the “you really like me” Oscar speech. 😥 7h
Cinfhen Oh My God, yesssssss @Hooked_on_books she was so insecure and understandably, now knowing her anything less than idyllic childhood. Even as a young actor in Hollywood she experienced some terrible levels of sexual abuse/ harassment 2h

Final 2 hours. Sally is spilling the beans about Burt Reynolds 😮🤗VERY juicy #NonfictionNovember

Cinfhen I was waiting to see if Sally would out Burt Reynolds @Megabooks but no, although she doesn‘t really portray him in the most flattering light. 18h
MicheleinPhilly Out him as in revealing he was gay??? 16h
Cinfhen Well sort of @MicheleinPhilly I always felt he was bisexual & I think he was homophobic when he gave interviews ( which kind of bothered me) 16h
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen Huh. That had never occurred to me but I admittedly never paid much attention to him. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 15h

#MOvember When a #BeautifulStranger comes to town claiming to be the son of a devil, he upends the peace & tranquility of a small Ohio town.
🎶 I looked into your eyes
And my world came tumbling down
You're the devil in disguise
That's why I'm singing this song🎶

JennyM I remember reading this a few years ago during a very hot summer that pretty much did melt everything!! 🥵 1d
Reggie Have you read this? I was literally sobbing out loud. Lol 23h

A lighthearted read that actually went a little too overboard (😉) towards the end of the novel. If you like reading about dysfunctional families, topped with rich people problems and a bit of #JewishHumor then this book will definitely float your boat 🛳😜 I enjoyed this story for what is was; fluff and fun. I would #BorrowNotBuy

Cinfhen Tagging @KarenUK because I think this one is totally your jam 💜 2d

#MOvember I don‘t understand the low Litsy ratings!!!??! This book is part memoir, part Wild West narrative, part ghost story, part Jewish history and it‘s truly fascinating. Hannah Nordhaus traces her families roots from 1800‘s Germany to a little #GhostTown in Santa Fe in the early 1900‘s where her great great grandmother is said to haunt her once elegant mansion which is now a boutique hotel.

TrishB This is the weird algorithm!! As most of the posts aren‘t even ratings. 2d
ljuliel I read the book and thought it was ok. Not terrific, but not bad. The rating system in here is a bit hard to figure out. You do the 👍🏼👎🏼👉🏽or bail. That‘s why I try to rate with stars if I have the space. When I read this, it reminded me of the tv show Ghost Adventures . I like ghost shows that don‘t go overboard, but that Zak dude is a bit on the edge 🙄. They supposedly investigated this place. (edited) 2d
Cinfhen I really liked the history @ljuliel I wasn‘t aware that Jews from Germany immigrated out west. It just blew me away. 2d

Cinfhen The algorithms are SO frustrating @TrishB / I need to be mindful of that when looking up a book on Litsy 2d
Librarybelle This sounds like a book I would enjoy! Stacking this! 2d
ljuliel I just looked this up, as your post made me a bit curious. I‘ve always figured that all the folks in our country, no matter what religion or race, generally settled wherever they wanted, whether it was East or West. I found this that tells a bit more about Jewish people settling out West. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Jews_in_the_United_States 2d
Tex2Flo How cool to have your own relative be a haunting presence! Intrigued and stacked. 2d
Cinfhen Thanks for the link @ljuliel ♥️ 2d

#NonfictionNovember There is no doubt that Jesmyn Ward is a talented writer & an important voice for our times. However, her memoir failed to move me the same way her fiction book Sing, Unburied Sing did. I‘m not sure if it was the choppy structure or detached tone but I always felt at arms length while reading. Her brutal childhood has certainly given her plenty of writing material. Im interested in picking up her essay collection next.

Kalalalatja I have seen some mixed reviews for this, which always surprises me because I loved Sing, Unburied, Sing. But based on your review, I get it more. I would have a tough time being fully engaged in a memoir with a detached tone 2d
Hooked_on_books So I have a theory (watch out! 😆). I think Ward‘s tone could be described as matter of fact, which is something I have always responded well to, but I can see it coming across as cold and sterile. I just bailed on Inheritance, which I saw that you loved, because I found it overly dramatic. So my theory is that more nakedly emotional memoir works better for you while matter of fact ones work better for me. Based on my n of 2, of course. 😬 1d
Cinfhen @Hooked_on_books nailed it!!!!!!! That makes a lot of sense 🙌🏻I LOVED 1d

🎧In Pieces - #NF Only 2 hours into Sally Field‘s memoir & it‘s shaping up to be pretty explosive 🧨 She‘s a fantastic writer & her story is very powerful 👇🏽

Cinfhen ADD ON
📖✅Men We Reap ~ #NF well written but a little sterile- wasn‘t a fan of the book‘s structure. Prefer JW fiction this was only a so-so

Oh God!!! This book is leaving ME In Pieces 😢😭😢TW: sexual abuse
Wow, Sally Field‘s can write so viscerally and passionately
I‘m sorry, Sally. You deserved better. I don‘t wish to judge your mother but she failed you. Weakness is not an excuse for a parent.

ljuliel Sounds very good, although very sad. Sometimes the best books ( to me ) are ones like this , that can emotionally hit you. 4d
Cinfhen I was expecting a light, maybe gossipy book about Hollywood @ljuliel this is NOT what I‘m getting. It‘s raw but so elegantly told. Im amazed at Sally‘s composure and openness to go there. 4d
ljuliel Yes, I never knew much about her. She was the Flying Nun when I was a kid. She has always been cute. I don‘t keep up much with movie stars , so my information on them is very sparse. It sounds as if she has overcome a lot to be where she is today. Probably lots of therapy ? 4d
Kdgordon88 This has been on my Kindle for awhile now. You have inspired me to move it closer to the top of my queue. 4d

Eve Fletcher is 46, divorced and a newly empty nester. She‘s discovering there‘s a lot of pleasure to be had, if one chooses to #ExpressYourself This book was a little naughty and some parts felt disingenuous but still a fun read tackling some heavy topics.

This book falls under the category of #RealLifeIsStrangerThanFiction 🤯What a wild read!! Douglas Preston is a gifted storyteller & this book didn‘t disappoint. Preston later ties in the Amanda Knox case which took place in the same area and with the same shoddy investigators. Makes one question the abuse of power & legal system worldwide. I‘ve taken the time to really think about my response to these questions. I don‘t mean any disrespect or offense to anyone.
1. The many friendships I‘ve made. I‘ve seen true kindness & compassion.
2. I feel the swaps became an ugly monster on Litsy. Once the scamming, complaining, and likes & dislikes started the tone of Litsy changed for me personally. Im not against swaps but I do think it brought out a darker side. 👇🏼

Cinfhen 3. New stickers, please!!!

4. I post daily and sometimes multiple times a day.

5. I like that Litsy offers interactive/connective activities.

6. For me Litsy is foremost about books and sharing our love of books and reading. I do think a small handful of people have made Litsy about popularity or Litfluence points, so I‘d like to see that feature eliminated.
merelybookish Well said! 6d
See All 59 Comments
merelybookish I have also been thinking about these questions too...I know something has changed but haven't figured out exactly what...but I still love lots about Litsy. 6d
Cinfhen I agree @merelybookish I ❤️Litsy and the early days were magical. The first #SecretSantaGoesPostal swap started by @BookishMarginalia was AMAZING 🙌🏻 We just experienced growing pains but I still think this is THE BEST PLACE to talk about books (edited) 6d
GlassAsDiamonds I agree about the swaps, wholeheartedly. I loved the first swap I participated in but then they went crazy. They became geographically limited (so many US only) or with so many expected inclusions that international postage was just exorbitant. For a long time, every time I opened my Listy, a swap I couldn‘t participate in or wasn‘t welcome in was all I found.... or people complaining about said. They‘ve got to be managed better. 6d
BookwormAHN I know I stayed a way from joining Litsy for a while over the Litsy influence thing and I admit now that I've been here for awhile it can be fun to see the numbers increase. However I still think there is a lot of intimidation with that. 6d
Balibee146 Have to say I agree about the swaps too. I don't participate in them so apols if I sound a bit Bah Humbug. On opening days the posts now can crowd out everything else and with more and more swaps that scrolling experience has gone from a very occasional one to very regular. 6d
Cinfhen For me the swaps became like a hostage negotiation with so many demands which turned me sour from all swaps @GlassAsDiamonds @Balibee146 but I‘m not trying to ban them. I know they can be fun and enjoyable. But there does seem to be a swap for every occasion under the sun😂 6d
Lizpixie Well said my #sisterfromanothermister And yes, More Stickers Please!!⭐️ 6d
Balibee146 @cinfhen yup and multiple different ones sometimes for every occasion - which can suit different groups. I saw a suggestion about creating a way to filter them to a separate dedicated place.... Someone said you can already hide specific tags but I can't see how on my phone... These sorts of possibilities would be fab I think - swappers can have their fun without the whole feed getting filled up 😂😂💕 6d
Cinfhen Who doesn‘t love NEW stickers????? @Lizpixie 6d
Cinfhen On a desktop you can access Litsy and from the site there is an option to mute specific hashtags @Balibee146 6d
Balibee146 @cinfhen cool thanks 👍 6d
GlassAsDiamonds @Cinfhen oh yeah, they can be so much fun!!! But... I think they‘re out of hand and often highly exclusionary at the moment. Regulations would be good & maybe a way to corral them as well as @Balibee146 mentioned. I want to be able to participate in at least a few but at the moment it feels like we‘re creating these very hard divisions within Litsy between constant swapers and non/partial swappers. 6d
lele1432 @BookwormAHN so agree with this! I didn't post at all specifically for that reason. It can be intimidating. I think the best thing about Litsy is the interaction, so I definitely understand having something in place to try to keep that up, but maybe it could be something different. 6d
lele1432 @Cinfhen I always want new stickers!! And as someone who just started participating in swaps, it was a great experience for me but I can understand what you've mentioned and I also think it would be good to have a way to maybe separate them so they don't feel exclusionary or take over timelines all the time lol. Like a gifts/games tab maybe?? 6d
Hooked_on_books Initially, I LOVED the swaps. I thought they were such fun! And then I saw people really going overboard with their purchases and it felt more like a competition. Then I didn‘t receive a swap package at all because someone decided not to send me one. So I‘ve soured on swaps other than those set up between certain fabulous individuals. 😬 6d
erzascarletbookgasm Nicely said. And give me all the stickers!! 6d
Cinfhen Ohhhhh, a game/gift tag is a phenomenal idea @lele1432 @TimSpalding @Balibee146 @GlassAsDiamonds @Hooked_on_books (edited) 6d
erzascarletbookgasm I hope Litsy will remain the favoured platform to talk about BOOKS and books related stuff for all of us. Instead of turning it to another popularity thing. 😔 6d
Cinfhen New stickers seems like a simple request @lele1432 @erzascarletbookgasm 6d
Cinfhen I‘m not saying the Litfluence encourages that type of competition @BookwormAHN @lele1432 @erzascarletbookgasm but it does seem to create a sort of false hierarchy which is irrelevant to discussing books 6d
lele1432 Well stated! 6d
Balibee146 More Stickers would be awesome. I love the simplicity of the app but sometimes I wish I could quickly search friends' stacks to see if they have read and reviewed a book..... So many wonderful folks and I trust their opinions 😘😘 6d
batsy Thank you for your thoughts; I think I agree with almost everything. Like @merelybookish I feel something has changed and mainly I think it's the intimate feel. It does make me feel a bit sad; Litsy has always seemed different to me than other social media because it's more about connections and bookish chat instead of popularity and noise. 💜 6d
ljuliel Wow, this will be a challenging post to answer because if so many replies. I‘ll try to respond accordingly to everyone. First of all, @Cinfhen , thanks for your honesty. If there are things bugging people, it‘s best to say something so we can possibly address it. I agree with swaps. I did some in the past but won‘t do another. I think they‘re too lopsided in a way bi see some people getting a box load filled with items , while another gets 👇🏼 6d
ljuliel 👆🏼a toothpick and a pencil. I mentioned awhile back that they should have different levels for a swap ( like set amounts of money and you could join either a small, medium or large price range, so it was more fair) Then sometimes we have people coming out of the woodwork to be in things where they might win a prize, but we never see them any other time ......then those that get a nice box of items and don‘t send ANYTHING. They really bug me. 6d
ljuliel Swaps are a problem in my opinion. I‘m with others who would like to block certain hashtags so you don‘t see certain things, but that feature won‘t work for me. I‘m not sure why. It has to be done from the Litsy web page, not from the app. I type in the names time after time and it never takes them or saves them. I‘m not sure if swaps are the main reason so many Oldies left, but it could be for some of them. 6d
ljuliel @merelybookish thanks for posting in here. I hope you also filled out a questionnaire. I just woke up so catching up from middle of the night posts. 🙂 6d
ljuliel @GlassAsDiamonds I agree about the swaps. There‘s gotta be a way so all can participate if they want to. Maybe dividing the list up into regions would help ? I‘m not sure, but it really isn‘t fair that some are left out because of location. I know there used to be so many swaps that was what the majority of posts were. Way too many swaps at the same time. I also mentioned that awhile back, but was shot down. There CAN be too much of a good thing 6d
ljuliel @BookwormAHN Yes,the likes and points things CAN be looked at as a popularity thing, but I don‘t pay much attention to it anymore. I just prefer a good talk with other book people, so I don‘t care how many points they have 200 or 20,000. Doesn‘t matter. I just want people to participate, talk books, reviews, new books coming out, pretty covers, ebooks, audios, etc. Just talk books. That‘s why we‘re here. The numbers arent important. 6d
ljuliel @Hooked_on_books I‘m sorry you got ripped off in a swap. Exactly one of the reasons I don‘t like them. We have people that are members who never or rarely post, but they come out if the woodwork when the word SWAP is mentioned. They get a nice package but send nothing in return. That‘s REALLY nasty. I hate when that happens. I ran a few swaps where people didn‘t send their packages so I bought stuff and filled 2 more boxes for those left out.☹️ 6d
Hooked_on_books @ljuliel Yes, that‘s exactly what happens! Those people suck. I‘ve put together swap boxes for those who didn‘t get them as well. I remember how badly I felt, missing out on box opening day, and I hated for others to feel that way. I figure it‘s just not worth it and now I only swap books on an individual basis, which has been great. 6d
ljuliel @Balibee146 I know what you mean about scrolling through truckloads of swap posts to find a BOOK post. There‘s supposed to be a way to weed out certain hashtags, but it doesn‘t work for me. (edited) 6d
ljuliel @erzascarletbookgasm Agreed. I‘d like to focus a lot more on the book end of things. I won‘t go into any detail here , but I jumped into a lot of things social- wise in here earlier , and it ended badly with some folks. It makes me sad , but I‘ve learned that if I want to stay, I have to move on and only focus on the books and not get that involved again. It was hurtful , and there may be hurt feelings on the other end as well. I can‘t 👇🏼 6d
ljuliel Contact the others to open up the conversation. So I leave it alone. 6d
ljuliel @batsy I‘m hoping we can get some of that old feeling back. If we all work at it, I think it‘ll be a new and improved place. 💕 6d
BarbaraBB Great answers my friend. I must say I am hardly aware of anyone‘s Litfluence and agree with you it doesn‘t interest me in the least. It‘s the books and the people that make this such a great place. And I‘d like to work on it to keep it that way! 🧡 6d
janeycanuck Oh, it warms my heart to know I‘m not the only one wondering where the book posts are. As soon as I see a new swap, I screenshot it and mute the hashtag next time I‘m at the computer. I wish we could mute from the app. 6d
ljuliel @janeycanuck Sadly, the mute doohickey won‘t work for me. I‘ve tried it repeatedly. 6d
janeycanuck @ljuliel That really sucks. With what feels like the bulk of posts not being about books, I‘d probably have left Litsy by now if I couldn‘t mute. 6d
ljuliel @janeycanuck That makes me sad...that might be why so many others left. All we can do is try to get more focus on the books. I just have to keep on rolling to get past things I‘m not much interested in. I don‘t care if others like it..that‘s fine. I‘m just trying to stick with the books at this point. 6d
Mdargusch Yes yes yes yes yes yes! 6d
4thhouseontheleft I agree with almost all of this! I have cut down my participation in swaps tremendously, despite hosting one for my first time in Oct. I think the plethora of posts around some challenges (including ones I have participated in 😂) can get tiring, and I'm sure it's off-putting for some Littens who don't participate in them at all. There are a lot less reviews and book discussions in my feed these days. 6d
janeycanuck @ljuliel Yeah, I think it‘s great that people enjoy stuff and I don‘t want that to go away for them, I just don‘t want to see it. Everyone should be able to Litsy how they want to Litsy - and it would be awesome if the app could give people more control over their own experience. 6d
4thhouseontheleft @GlassAsDiamonds Would you be willing to share more detail about how swaps feel exclusionary? I only hosted my first swap last October, and am still on the fence if I will do it again next year during #Screamathon. But, if I do, I absolutely want to do whatever I can to make it as inclusive as possible. I cut down my swap participation tremendously, I do 2 a year at the most. 6d
Cinfhen I‘m not trying to bash Litsy or those that host/participate in the swaps but the swaps seem to shift the focus of Litsy a little bit and that saddens me @janeycanuck @4thhouseontheleft @Mdargusch @BarbaraBB 6d
4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen I get that! I think these are important discussions to be had. 6d
GlassAsDiamonds @4thhouseontheleft I‘d love to (& be happy to take it to email if you‘d prefer so I‘m not ranting in @Cinfhen ‘s timeline!). I love swaps and I really don‘t want them stopped completely but there are SO many that are “US only”. International participation isn‘t that hard. We pay for the postage anyway so excluding us just seems lazy or worse. Similarly, price restrictions don‘t help if you aren‘t paying US prices whereas item limits are easy. 6d
4thhouseontheleft @GlassAsDiamonds I didn‘t realize that many excluded non-US Littens! That is a shame. I‘ve never seen price restrictions, but I admittedly don‘t look at the details of most swaps. 6d
GlassAsDiamonds @4thhouseontheleft oh man, the US Only! It‘s a nagging pain that‘s not just Litsy but since we‘re community building AND participants pay postage, it really annoys me here. Price limits are a great idea in theory and really help curtail the crazy consumerism BUT if I‘m buying a new book here in Singapore, I will not get out of it for US$20- no matter what I buy. A criteria like “one book and a bookmark” however is achievable world wide. 6d
ravenlee I really liked swaps at first. Now I don‘t. I‘ve followed the requirements, or even felt like I went a little over the top, and then I received either something so extravagant it makes me feel bad for my recipient to get so little, or I get the bare minimum or less and feel cheated. I did one for my daughter and we sent a nice gift, and what she got for hers was less than the posted minimum, and none of her interests. Broke my heart. 6d
Cinfhen I‘m so sorry that both you & your daughter had a bad swap experience @ravenlee 😔I think I would be heartbroken too if my child was soured by this experience. 6d
ravenlee She didn‘t mind so much, thankfully, but I was really frustrated. 6d
janeycanuck @Cinfhen Agreed! I‘d hate to see them go away for those who enjoy & participate. It‘s just not my cup of tea. Happily, muting works for me and I just hide them! 6d
Reviewsbylola I haven‘t bothered with the swaps in probably two years. They were fun initially but I don‘t miss doing them. 6d
Kalalalatja Well said Cindy! I miss participating in swaps, but it became too stressful, and soured my Litsy experience, so I stopped. 5d
Cinfhen I think we are lucky @Kalalalatja @Reviewsbylola as we have developed friendships and are able to create our own little book exchanges amongst ourselves❣️The swaps were fun in the beginning but they really got out of hand. I don‘t miss them at all!!! My last one was the #MugLove and I received the BEST MUG 💙🤗😘 5d

#MOvember 🎶It‘s your love that I still #Crave 🎶This memoir sounds like it‘s right in my wheelhouse. And it would also work for #Booked2020 #ParentChildMemoir I‘m eagerly awaiting the #NFChallenge hosted by @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

Just got a big laugh after reading Douglas Preston describing “transitions” and “cultural differences” 😂😂😂In August 2000 he moved to Florence with his wife and two young children “ Living in Italy was going to be the adventure of a lifetime, for which we were singularly unprepared.” Yup!!!! #LifeOfAnExpat #NoClue

vivastory 😂 The chainsmoking teachers 7d

Crazeedi This sounds like a great read! 6d
Insightsintobooks Oh thats sounds like a good read, plus I could use a laugh. 6d
Cinfhen Not too many laughs in this book @Insightsintobooks as it‘s a true crime about an Italian serial killer but it‘s compulsive and hard to put down @Crazeedi 6d
Insightsintobooks @Cinfhen well, that's what I get for not reading the description of the book but I think I'll still look into it. 6d
Cinfhen Hahaha @Insightsintobooks I‘ve done that before!!!! Preston is such a good writer that he DOES manage to bring gaiety to even the darkest subjects. 6d
Mdargusch I‘ve always wondered about this book since I love true crime. 6d
Cinfhen Im happy to send it to you @Mdargusch I think you will LOVE IT 6d
Reviewsbylola 😆😆 I bet you can relate! 6d

This story keeps getting stranger and stranger @vivastory It‘s hard NOT to imagine The Pink Panther‘s inept police detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau when I read about the Polizia and Carabinieri.

JamieArc Whenever people talk about the Amanda Knox case, or ask for a true crime rec, this is always the book I suggest. Make sure you read the author‘s commentary on the case at the very end. 7d
Cinfhen I‘m SOOOO tempted to read the afterward NOW @JamieArc but will it ruin parts of Monster??? 7d
JamieArc @Cinfhen I don‘t remember! So it‘s probably best to wait 😬. 7d
Crazeedi @Cinfhen and now that I see this post, I remember reading something about this book or hearing about it 6d

Wow, this was such an evocative, intensely dark and well rounded story. I can understand how this tome has become a well lauded classic. Having just read Haunting of Hill House, I was curious to go back and read an original Gothic tale. Aside from being a little too winded towards the end , the Audible original full cast recording pushed this book into 4 star status. Thanks to @erzascarletbookgasm @Sace @batsy for reading along with me.

4thhouseontheleft I think I‘m going to reread this next year! It‘s my favorite gothic horror. 7d
erzascarletbookgasm You blazed through this! 👏 I am enjoying it much although some comments about the fairer sex made me 🙄 a bit! 😆 7d
Cinfhen Perfect for #GothicHorror @4thhouseontheleft 🧛‍♂️🏰I know what you mean @erzascarletbookgasm although Mina was pretty kick ass 💄it took me about 9 days to get through book & audio, towards the end I felt it dragging 7d

Sace I am still in the very early part of the audiobook. I've got a long weekend coming up and I hope to make some good progress. 7d
Cinfhen The audio saved me on this one @Sace I did read parts on @SerialReader but overall it was the audio narration that kept me hooked! 7d
Sace I can already say the same. Even the little I've listened too is addictive. 7d
batsy Woohoo! 👏🏽 I'm so glad I'm reading this; I'm not sure what I expected but this is stranger than what I expected (in a very good way, if that makes sense 😅) 7d
Cinfhen Agreed @batsy I thought the language would be off putting but it‘s pretty straightforward 7d
Andrew65 This was a great production, I listened to it a couple of years Go. 6d
Sace Egads! I just got to the bit when Harker saw the Count crawling "lizard-like" down a wall. ? *shudder* 6d
Cinfhen Yes!!! @Sace so atmospheric and anxiety inducing 6d
Cinfhen This recording is a great production @Andrew65 and I feel like the actors really took on their characters 6d
Mdargusch I‘ve heard mixed reviews on this that made me decide not to read this. I believe @Reviewsbylola maybe? 6d
Reviewsbylola I think you‘re thinking of Frankenstein. @mdargusch And don‘t take my word for it because I read it in college. 6d
Cinfhen I was really pleasantly surprised by how well crafted and readable this novel was @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola 6d
Mdargusch Now I might need to read it then. 5d

#MOvember Such a quirky book but full of charm and heart. Very similar to Extremely Loud, Incredibly Close which niggled me a little bit, #sorry 🤷🏼‍♀️still an endearing story of love and loss.

Andrew65 Grrr.... I was going to choose this book, back to the drawing board. 😂 7d
AnansiGirl Sorry not sorry, I‘m giggling like a Game of Thrones fangirl over the UK title version 6d

Whoa @vivastory I can‘t stop reading !!! Book is so wild ~ and tantalizing 😲I was in Florence the summer of 1984/ backpacking with a friend. I have no recall about this terrifying case.Scary to think a serial killer was on the loose☠️I just finished chapter 18 and I need to force myself to put the book down so I can run a bunch of errands.

peaknit Sounds awesome, on the hold list it goes! 1w
Cinfhen I‘m only done with the first third but it‘s excellent so far @peaknit I can also recommend this book by him 1w
Cathythoughts Sounds excellent! Stacked 1w

vivastory @peaknit I second the recommendation of Lost City of the Monkey God. Preston knows how to write a nf so that it reads like a novel. Several times so far in Monster I had to remind myself that this really happened, such a bizarre story. 1w
vivastory That's crazy that you were backpacking in the area when all of this occurred, Cindy! I checked out my copy from the library, but I will definitely be going to the bookstore to read the additional materials about the Knox case. 1w
peaknit @Cinfhen @vivastory thank you!! I got this one right away today from the library on my kindle, I will check out your other recommendation too. It‘s non fiction Nov after all 😊 1w
Cinfhen Hope you enjoy both books @peaknit tag us and share your thoughts!!!! 1w
Cinfhen I‘m curious about the Amanda Knox connection @vivastory I almost want to flip ahead to that section but I don‘t want to ruin any parts of the Monster story. It‘s so compulsive!! 1w

TheEllieMo Not done this one before, can I check something? By “free to read in any order” do you mean that if I read something in Spring that fits a Fall prompt, I can still tick it off? 1w
Cinfhen Yup @TheEllieMo you can read complete seasons or bits and pieces from each season spread throughout the year🤓whatever strikes your fancy 1w
Cailey_Mac Sooo basically you can read any prompt from any season, as long as you finish all the seasons in one year correct? And is this starting in 2020 or now? 😊 1w
Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm silkpunk is a blend of science fiction and fantasy. silkpunk draws inspiration from classical East Asian antiquity. I‘ll find the list of recommendations and tag you 1w
Cinfhen @Cailey_Mac it starts Jan 1 - Dec 31 2020!!! It‘s fun and people get really creative with their choices which is always great!!! 1w
Cinfhen @Cailey_Mac and even if you only complete 10 prompts you‘re eligible to be entered on a drawing for each book read earns you a chance to win a gift card 1w
Cailey_Mac @Cinfhen oh cool! I think I will join then, and I hope with this next semester of college I will be able to balance my time out better so I can read; this semester has been murder for my reading 😅 1w
Cinfhen Awesome @Cailey_Mac don‘t stress about it!! Just read whatever you like and you‘ll be surprised how many boxes you‘ll tick off without even trying 🥳 1w
Cailey_Mac @Cinfhen awesome, will do! I‘m sure I will have fun doing it too📖🤗 1w
TheEllieMo @Cinfhen thanks 😊 1w
TheEllieMo @Cinfhen thanks 😊 1w

Cinfhen I feel like every book read is a win @Megabooks so just have fun!! AND There‘s still 2 months left for 2019 @LibrarianRyan ♥️🙌🏻 1w
Reviewsbylola I quit #pop19 mid year for that reason! @Megabooks I‘m just doing this one next year. 1w
Bookzombie I‘m not sure I‘m going to complete this year‘s challenge. 😕I told myself no challenges next year, but your challenge is always fun and tempting! 🤔 1w
Cinfhen We tried to keep the prompts pretty vague @Bookzombie so lots of different books would work. Hopefully you‘ll find books that work without even trying 😊 and every book read earns a drawing entry so it‘s always a win!!! 1w
mrp27 Yay, I'm in! But I better get cracking so I can finish 2019! 😬 1w
Cinfhen Fantastic @mrp27 💜📚🧡📚💚📚 1w
JennyM I love waking up to find you‘ve dropped the prompts!!!! Thanks so much ladies for all you do. I so enjoy this challenge @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen 1w
emilyhaldi Woohoo!!! I realized a week ago that I never posted my reads from last quarter 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1w
4thhouseontheleft @JennyM Thanks for the 💜! So happy you enjoy it! 1w
4thhouseontheleft @emilyhaldi You can still do it! 1w
BarbaraTheBibliophage @JennyM Aww. Glad we could make your morning. 😘 1w
Cinfhen @JennyM as you were waking up, I was falling asleep 😴 So happy you‘re back for another round xx💋 1w
Cinfhen @emilyhaldi It‘s never too late/ whatever wasn‘t entered last quarter can count for this quarter‘s drawing 😘 1w
Cathythoughts I‘m very excited 🤸‍♀️ prompts are brilliant ! 1w
Cinfhen Yay @Cathythoughts ❤️🙌🏻📚🥂can‘t wait to see what you come up with❣️❣️❣️❣️ 1w
Cathythoughts Signed up & all 👍❤️ 1w

Simona Just signed up! With my sporadic visits here it was quite possible that I would overlook my favorite challenge ... Thank you Cindy for tag ♥️ and thank you ladies for your work, time and thoughtful prompts. @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m in the planning mood 🤓😘 1w
4thhouseontheleft @Simona Glad you‘re coming back for another year! 1w
Cinfhen It wouldn‘t be a complete challenge without your participation @Simona xx so glad you‘re joining us 💕 1w
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen currently composing you an email re #gothichorror - you've chosen another of my #hobbyhorses (another being a certain tv show lol!). Will share some on here later but can go into more detail on the email! 7d
Cinfhen Thanks @jenniferw88 looking forward to seeing your thoughts 7d
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen just sent it! There's quite a few 🤣🤣🤣 7d
Crazeedi I just signed up!! 6d
Crazeedi I've not done this, are there rules? Do I have to have books planned and posted?? 6d
Hooked_on_books Ok, I‘ve seen these posts before but haven‘t previously joined, but I plan to jump in for 2020! Just signed up. 6d
SaturnDoo So excited to see this. I've been patiently waiting 🤣😂 thank you for hosting again. Lots of fun. 6d
Cinfhen Nope @Crazeedi @Hooked_on_books not necessary to “commit” to a plan!! Just read what you like/ when you like and you‘ll be amazed at how many prompts you‘ll check off. There are only 3 “rules” 1. Have FUN!! 2. U can ONLY use 1 book towards 1 prompt 3. To be eligible for the quarterly drawing you need to post a wrap up summary anytime during the last 10 days of the quarter (More info is given on the signup form) 6d
Cinfhen Excellent @SaturnDoo ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️looking forward to seeing what you read 😊 6d
Crazeedi @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen some of the prompts I dont understand, so I'm thinking I can ask for help?? 6d
4thhouseontheleft @Crazeedi you can absolutely ask for help! There are slightly longer explanations on the google form, have you had a look at that? If that doesn't answer your question, ask away! 6d
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Crazeedi We like to pick prompts that are a bit open to your own interpretation also. If it‘s a new genre to you, try googling also. There are always articles with ‘10 best/new books of this genre.” If not, ask away! 6d

Cinfhen Good plan @TrishB 😉 1w
See All 11 Comments
Sace @TrishB I can already predict that for me, my forecast and book report will not match up 🤣 1w
4thhouseontheleft You finished #nonfiction2019, right? I‘m struggling to find a NF book about music that holds my interest. Any suggestions? 1w
Cinfhen I read the memoir by Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers @4thhouseontheleft It was excellent but a little dated ( I think it was published 2002) 1w
Cinfhen I also listened to this one on audio via Hoopla and it was very good @4thhouseontheleft (edited) 1w
TrishB @Sace same! 😁 1w
TrishB @4thhouseontheleft I‘ve just finished the Debbie Harry memoir/autobiography and I thought it was really good 👍🏻 1w
Reviewsbylola Lilli de Jong is a good one! 6d
Cinfhen I think I might be bailing on Lilli @Reviewsbylola it‘s not really holding/grabbing my attention 6d

Know My Name: A Memoir | Chanel Miller
post image

I was unfamiliar with the Stanford rape case. From the very first page I was gripped by Chanel Miller‘s plight and hung on her every word. She so eloquently and viscerally walks us through that life changing night and then the ensuing aftermath. With raw details and inspired prose Chanel shares her fears, pain, anger, confusion and sadness. This should be required reading for all college freshmen.

TrishB Stacked 👍🏻 Would actually like to read this one! 1w
Cinfhen It‘s going to break your heart @TrishB and being the mum of a uni girl you‘re blood boil!!!! 1w
RealBooks4ever This is a must read for me. I signed a petition to get the backward judge off the bench. 🥊 What an injustice the trial was! 😡 1w
See All 14 Comments
Cinfhen Yay for you @RealBooks4ever THAT JUDGE 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬unbelievable 1w
squirrelbrain There was an article about this in the UK press recently (I think maybe the Sunday Times?) I really want to read this too... 1w
MicheleinPhilly @RealBooks4ever I signed that petition too. This case made me FULL OF RAGE. So disgusting. 1w
RealBooks4ever @MicheleinPhilly We took him DOWN! 💪 1w
cariashley I really want to read this one - waiting for it from my library. 1w
Cinfhen @MicheleinPhilly 🙌🏻so worth reading @squirrelbrain @cariashley and I‘ve heard the audio is phenomenal 1w
cariashley @Cinfhen ooh good to hear, that‘s what I‘m waiting for! 1w
Marla I listened to the book. Chanel reads it and when she gets to her statement she read in court she has a hard time. You can hear her struggling to stay in control of her emotions. Very powerful book. 1w
Cinfhen @Marla I‘m sure listening to hear read the victim statement had to be so moving!!! That Judge 🤬 1w
erzascarletbookgasm Just saw your review. I‘m going to get myself a copy. I heard she‘s very fun and witty on Instagram. 18h

My first #BookReport
🎧👎🏼I bailed on Where The Desert Meets the Sea ~ cliche characters and terrible narration
📚👍🏻The Floating Feldmans ~ #LoL read with really good writing 😂only halfway through
🎧+📚👍🏻Dracula ~ first time reading / listening - AMAZING Audible cast about 2/3 done
👇🏽continue below

Cinfhen 📚Lilli De Jong
I completed first part of #LilliRead Right now, this is my weakest read. I‘m finding the story “preachy” & the writing a little too trite. Not sure if I‘ll continue.
Know My Name 📚👍🏽
started Friday evening finished Saturday afternoon
Absolutely absorbing/ compelling & powerful

How was your reading week?!?!

Megabooks My reading week was so weird, but I did finish 3 audiobooks in the hospital (all reread David Sedaris). It was kind of a strange fever dream listening to him. I‘ve finally finished a print book 🎉🎉🎉 at the hotel. A reread of L. Moriarty‘s latest. So glad you had a good reading week! Wishing you a wonderful rest of the weekend! 😘😘 1w
Cinfhen I‘m sure listening to David Sedaris while on pain meds must have been some wild trip @Megabooks xx glad you‘re back on Litsy!!! Hope you‘re feeling stronger every day 1w

My #NonfictionNovember contenders 🤓 some have been on my shelves pre-Litsy

Librarybelle The Monster of Florence is good! 2w
Hooked_on_books Monster and Five Days are both terrific. I have the Ward but haven‘t read it yet; I don‘t think you can miss with her. And I‘ve heard great things about Know My Name—I anxiously await my library hold! 2w
Cinfhen You want to try and buddy read Men @Hooked_on_books since our Friday Black was a flop!!! 2w
See All 27 Comments
Cinfhen I‘m looking forward to Monster @Librarybelle 2w
Hooked_on_books Yeah, I‘d be up for that. Maybe the week after next? I‘m quite backlogged on my library stack and haven‘t been able to read as much this week, as my MIL is in town. 2w
Cinfhen Sure @Hooked_on_books give me a heads up when u want to start and hopefully we‘ll have better luck 🤞🏼 2w
Hooked_on_books I shall! I‘ve read a bit of Friday Black but am taking it slow. I‘m finding it a bit uneven. I can see why you guys bailed. 2w
TorieStorieS I also really enjoyed 2w
SamAnne Loved Men We Reaped.
Cinfhen Yay!!! Glad to be getting such positive feedback @TorieStorieS @SamAnne 2w
MicheleinPhilly Five Days is TOUGH but excellent. 2w
Blaire @MicheleinPhilly agree. Very glad I read it. I‘d say the same about men we reaped. 2w
4thhouseontheleft 🙌🏽🙌🏽 2w
MicheleinPhilly @Blaire I agree! I loved that one too! 2w
Cinfhen Yay!! Glad to know my shelves will not be disappointing me @Blaire @MicheleinPhilly @4thhouseontheleft 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Cinfhen I had a hard time choosing a reasonable number to read in a month, so my posted stack will probably grow and change as the month progresses! 🤣 2w
Cinfhen 5 seemed like a decent number and yes we always have the right to mix it up @4thhouseontheleft 2w
Reviewsbylola Memorial is so good but difficult to read. I can‘t read Jessamyn Ward again after 1w
britt_brooke Like @Reviewsbylola said, Five Days at Memorial is so good, but it‘s an incredibly difficult 500+ pages. 1w
vivastory Monster of Florence is pretty high on my list 1w
Cinfhen Poor JW really did a number on u @Reviewsbylola I‘ve heard 5 Days is dense @britt_brooke but really a necessary read!! Do you own Monster @vivastory I‘ll buddy read with you???? 1w
vivastory I'd definitely be interested in a buddy read of Monster! 1w
Cinfhen Can u start this week @vivastory ??? #NoPressure 😁😜 1w
vivastory I can! I should be finished with my current book by tomorrow night or Monday & then I'll start. I've been in the mood for a good true crime 👍 1w
Cinfhen Woohoo @vivastory I might start tomorrow but I‘ll keep you posted 🥰 1w

Woohoo 🎉 🎉 Thank you SO MUCH @LibraryThing 💗I haven‘t won a book in FOREVER ‼️This one sounds really good:

“Combining the emotional resonance of Home Fire with the ambition and innovation of Asymmetry, a lyrical and thought-provoking debut novel that explores the complex web of grief, memory, time, physics, history, and selfhood in the immigrant experience, and the complicated bond between daughters and mothers.”

#20BooksBy2020 Monthly check in!!
I read 9 more books this month bringing my total to 19!!
Only one to go and it‘s my IRL December bookclub ~ Purple Hibiscus
Favorite this month: Girl, Woman, Other

MelissaSue81 I‘m having trouble getting into girl, woman, other. I keep setting it aside for something else. I should stick it out though? 2w
RachelO Great going! 2w
erzascarletbookgasm So many great titles! 2w

Cathythoughts What @erzascarletbookgasm said ... great titles there 👏👏👏 2w
KarenUK Wow! Awesome job! 💕😊 2w
charl08 Love purple hibiscus. A favourite! 2w
charl08 Great graphic, too. A fun month? 2w
Lifeisasnap Nice job!! How did you like The Dutch House? 2w
Cinfhen @MelissaSue81 stick with Girl!!! In the beginning it seems disjointed but soon the stories start to connect and it‘s super satisfying ♥️🙌🏻 2w
Cinfhen I did have a fun month of reading @charl08 and I DID read some awesome books @KarenUK @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm @RachelO Dutch House was beautifully written & I was really absorbed in the story @Lifeisasnap BUT I wasn‘t a fan of the ending 😬 2w
marleed @Lifeisasnap @cinfhen I sank into the audiobook of the Dutch House narrated by Tom Hanks and now must own the physical book. I think it will be one of my Top6Reads for 2019. 2w
Cinfhen I bet Tom Hanks was a phenomenal narrator @marleed 2w
marleed @Cinfhen Yes! I‘m curious if I would have loved the story less had I absorbed it in print because Tom Hanks is so good. His ability to speak with the mind of a child is fascinating. 2w
Cinfhen Danny was such a great character @marleed but the mom 🤯🤬 2w
marleed @Cinfhen It reminds my of a good friend whose mother was seldom a part of her childhood. The mom is there in adulthood and I‘m amazed my friend is so accepting of her. My friend explained she just accepts her mother for what she is because that anger is futile. 2w
Cinfhen Your friend is much kinder and smarter than me @marleed Good for her #LifeIsTooShort 2w

Wolf Hall | Hilary Mantel
post image

#SoaringScores #EntryIntoTheGreatHall #BookishConfession I‘ve never read Hilary Mantel🙈where should I start?!!! Are they all #chunksters ?!?! #PageCountPhobia

SamAnne I‘m wondering too! Recently picked up a couple of her books used. I‘m thinking of starting with Wolf Hall. Other suggestions? (edited) 2w
merelybookish I've only read Wolf Hall. I liked it. It's historical fiction with a slant 2w
BarbaraBB I liked Wolf Hall too. Aftereards I started its sequel, Bring up the Bodies, but I couldn‘t get into that one. I‘ll try again, one day.... 😉 2w
See All 19 Comments
Kalalalatja I have read Wolf Hall, and I wasn‘t impressed 😅 and it is a bit chunky 2w
CarolynM I loved Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. I'm not looking forward to the last one in the trilogy though. That's the problem with fictionalised history - you know where it's going. 2w
Centique I loved them too but then I love this period of history and I‘m hungry to get a good feel for that world. It will be either love or hate for you I think. So #borrowdontbuy 2w
Cinfhen Thanks for all the feedback @merelybookish @BarbaraBB @Kalalalatja @Centique I think the #BorrowNotBuy is a good idea 💡 and I hear ya @CarolynM although I‘m fuzzy with all my world history 🤪 2w
Cinfhen @SamAnne seems like Wolf Hall is a good place to start!!! 2w
Hooked_on_books I like audio for chunksters, so maybe that‘s a way to go. 2w
Cinfhen I‘ll look into that option @Hooked_on_books Good suggestion 😌 2w
jillrhudy The third book in the trilogy is coming out March 3 with a 300,000 first printing from Henry Holt & Co. 2w
RealBooks4ever Loved Wolf Hall. It's not a tough read, never mind the page count. 💜 2w
CrowCAH I enjoyed the PBS miniseries based on this book! 2w
TrishB Love these ❤️ I can‘t wait for the 3rd! 2w
vivastory I LOVED the following (& it's not a chunkster) 2w
Reviewsbylola You shouldn‘t start. 😆 1w
Reviewsbylola Granted, I‘ve only read the first 150 pages of WH but never again!! 1w
Reviewsbylola I do think Mantel is very talented, but I don‘t have the energy or headspace that her books require. (edited) 1w
Cinfhen Hahaha @Reviewsbylola I think I may be in the same boat as you!!! Head space is KEY these days!!! 1w
