My library went all out for Hobbit Day (which was apparently this past Friday). There was a scavenger hunt plus book recommendations by the characters. My favorite was Legolas and a book on braids! 🤣😂 #lotr #lordoftherings #mylibrary

I thought this book was OK but not enough to read the next in the series. It has magic and witches and set in a city with it's own rules and law.
I didn‘t really like this book at first; I couldn‘t connect with the characters or the storyline. The middle of the book was better, making me like the characters more and feel empathy for them. But the ending…my god, the ending was good. It might seem a bit rushed to other people but I found that it delivered on the insane amount of build-up this book had and was on the edge of my seat during the entire last part.
3.5⭐️
Under the water, there was no light. Under the water, there was little air. Under the water dwelled the stories.
That was how they would get out of this. One foot in front of the other.
She‘d told him she wasn‘t a good person, and he‘d said that was fine. And he‘d meant it. She‘d told him she‘d protected the woman trying to kill him and he was still here in that stupid beautiful white dress, looking at Jack like she was made of stars even though she didn‘t deserve it.
Now that she‘d met others like her, she couldn‘t imagine leaving it to any of them. They can‘t have you, she thought about all of them: Agnolo, Rex, Sir. The people at the diner. She loved them without even knowing them.
“I wouldn‘t say anything. Who am I? Just some asshole who wrote a book.”
“‘Jack Marley is an asshole who wrote a book. When she isn‘t writing, she enjoys riding her motorcycle and wearing a very nice jacket.‘”
“You cannot commit a crime with a weapon that doesn‘t exist.”
“Well, let‘s skip to the end,” Jack said. “I‘ll tell you right now that I‘m not a good person.”
“You don‘t have to be good,” Turing said. “Good things haven‘t happened to you.”
All across the city, those who could feel it sensed the magic growing, in little spatters, the way rain falls at first before the deluge. The magic fed by the Maiden and the dozen little love stories that sprang up around her.
“She wishes I didn‘t exist.”
“That‘s so sad.”
“And we‘re done with this conversation.”
“I‘m glad you exist.”
Wow I'm so mad I bought this and disappointed bc this had queer potential. Sadly, it was just a very uncomfortable read where our black hero is a villain bc... idk, he took up his throne? He's consistently harassed and belittled and his chara is never truly developed. Meanwhile, many others (white) get better treatment even tho they're trash. I like trash but not this kind. But even wo all this it was a long book where nothing much happened ⚠️👇🏽
I wish I'd checked the reviews for this one before getting excited 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Next on the list for #AugustARC! I had another that was an old title I should get through but I've been meaning to read this one for a while so came back to the newer releases side 😆 let's see if it's good #netgalley
While the switching up of pronouns was a little confusing, I‘m guessing Szabo did this intentionally to show that Jesse is gender fluid and/or discovering their gender identity. That being said, there wasn‘t much else I liked. The story lacked a plot, and felt very disjointed. The multiple POVs were not executed well, and by the end of the novel, it truly felt as if nothing really happened. There were also many problematic elements to the story.
book without homophobia in it. I'm very disappointed in the book.
I really wanted to like this YA fantasy… I felt like it opened with an engaging hook, but several times while listening, I considered bailing on it altogether… the cast gets a bit garbled and the worldbuilding is flimsy at best… I wanted stronger characters and more of a plot. And the ending just sets up the sequel without actually resolving anything. The audio is well performed but the characters & their muddled relationships did nothing for me!
This book was not what I expected after reading the summary. I thought the story was going to be action and plot driven but the characters were surprisingly interesting and complex. I was absolutely invested until about halfway through when the story slightly lost its footing as the details of the different characters became confusing and muddled. The writing was great and I was extremely impressed with how engaging and beautifulit was.
