The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman
The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman | Mamen Sanchez
9 posts | 9 read | 21 to read
A hilarious and charming literary novel about the mysterious disappearance of an Englishman in the heart of Spain. Perfect for fans of quirky translated fiction like The One-Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared and literary gems like The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency. Atticus Craftsman never travels without a supply of Earl Grey and a favourite book. So when he is sent to shut down a failing literary magazine in Madrid, he packs both. A short Spanish jaunt later, he'll be back in Kent, cup of tea and smoked-salmon sandwich in hand. But the five ladies who run the magazine have other ideas. They'll do anything to keep the jobs they love and their cosy office together. Even if it involves hoodwinking Atticus with flashing eyes, the ghosts of literature past and a winding journey into the heart of Andalucía. With not the most efficient of detectives in hot pursuit, it's only a matter of time before Atticus Craftsman either falls in love, disappears completely or -- worst of all -- runs out of Earl Grey. Crime comedy, love story and literary adventure all at once, The Altogether Unexpected Disappearance of Atticus Craftsman is fiendishly fun and delightfully different.

Kind of strange but I liked it. Quite a cast of strange characters in this book.

Full of quirky characters, passionate lovers, literary references, this novel takes the reader on a playful romp through both Spain & the human soul. You know how a sprinkle of salt makes chocolate taste sweeter? This book seems all the more timeless for the dashes of modernity throughout -- the Spanish detective who references CSI, the wedding band that plays Lady Gaga -- all against the intoxicating backdrop of Madrid & Granada. Delightful!-Nici

Cute, light, and fun in a My Big Fat Greek Wedding sort of way. If you like reading translated novels, this is a good choice.
