While well researched and extremely engaging for its portrayal of life in North Korea, it falls rather flat at the end. It did keep me going until the end, however.

Coming in July—I am halfway through this one and enjoying it immensely. It is funny, heartwarming, and very insightful.
Reading this amazing work in preparation for hosting Jasper Fforde in Wyoming! So excited to meet this man who has taken one of the most influential books in my life and constructed an alternative world of tremendous proportion.
Five women hike into the Outback on a corporate retreat and four come out. What has happened to Alice? Aaron Falk returns in this follow up to The Dry. Well written, terrific character development!
Put this one on your TBR list for January when that gift certificate money is burning a hole in your pocket! Terrific murder mystery that moves back and forth in time. Good character development and plot twists up to the very end. Nothing is as it seems!
Listened to this on audio. Not the best reader but the story was absolutely fascinating! These women were amazing!
Through Benjamin Shreve‘s letters the reader is carried off on a fearsome adventure in 1870‘s Texas involving 14 yr old Benjamin, 12 yr old Sam, an aging Mexican who might or might not be a horse thief, an elderly preacher and his equally elderly dog, a murdering secessionist, and an invincible panther. Crook has created engaging characters the will remain in the reader's mind long after. Fabulous!
Chad Bird lays bare his life as only one who truly understands mercy and grace can. Through sharing his trials he reminds us that God's grace is there for all who repent and rely on Him rather than ourselves. This book is a loving gift to all who read it. #Chadbird
Yes, it is mid-May but snow is on the way. Glad I have a good book! I continue to be appalled of our treatment of Native Americans!
This was an enjoyable read but if you have ever read Crichton you will know that this is just a sketch for the novel he intended. The characters and situations lack his usual depth. Nonetheless this is still a terrific summer read and illuminates a time in American history of which few are aware. Definitely worth the read! (By the way, this is a bronze cast of a dinosaur at the Tate Museum in Casper--along with the cutest grandson ever!)
Terrific little summer read that will have you thinking about the impact of the importance some place on social media and its potential to impact our lives in ways we never considered.
I was prepared not to like this book and found myself delightfully in error! Not only did her use of Shakespeare's words NOT sound pretentious it gave illumination to the character's lives and emotions. In turn, the characters gave illumination to Shakespeare's words. Very well done first effort!
Finished it--the ending was slightly gratuitous but a good read overall. There are some images it will take a while to get out of my head so this is not for the faint of heart.
Morning reading for my day off.
Lucious sentences like this one keep you turning the pages craving more despite the the Cormac McCarthy-esque brutality of the story.
Listening to this on audio read by the incomparable Neil himself. What a delight!! Thanks Libro.fm!
This is an amazing, TRUE story of survival. This woman can actually write in a compelling manner. Better yet, 44 years later the couple are still together! Put this one on the top of your TBR stack!
Loved this brilliantly crafted homage to the classic British crime writers! Usually I find fiction about the writing/publishing/bookselling vocation to be insipid. This is an absolute romp from beginning to end and pure delight for lovers of everyone from Miss Jane Marple up to Tom and John Barnaby (😉😉). Just hope and pray they change the cover to a magpie! It is an insult to the author and the readers intelligence to have a crow on the cover!
This is so well done! I am only halfway but can't put it down. Just hope the final cover will actually have a magpie on it and not a crow! Does the graphic designer really think we are that ignorant???
Reading this amazing memoir. Can't put it down despite the siren call of the bed.....
This was absolutely NOT what I was expecting and near the end I thought it was just crazy and made no sense but I persisted and it all came together beautifully. It has one of the most intricate and well conceived plots I have read in a long time. I am still a little stunned!
I am on a French kick, apparently. I am listening to Black Water Lilies-set in Givenchy-and reading Crimes of Winter-set in Perpignan. I think this must have pubbed in France as Winter Mischief that or Europa plans to change the title when it releases. Anyway, it is terrific! I love #Europa!
This is my first Lehane and I was very pleased! Couldn't put it down; read it all in one day......my taxes still aren't done.....🙄. The author adds some unexpected twists that are improbable but do not take away from the enjoyment of the book. This should definitely go on your TBR list.
Just started this on audio. In the opening pages there is a description of blood in a stream that is nearly as artistic as Monet's lilies. Also, the narrator is pitch and tone perfect!!
So what does one do when one mistakenly arrives at the airport 3.5 hrs early for a flight to a much needed vacation? One pulls out a book,of course! Litsians are ever prepared! (I must REALLY need this vacation!)
This gem of a book is due in May. I am so in love with these characters! Everyone, it's Laura's fault that I am late to work two days in a row!!!
Why, oh why was I not born at such a time that I could have met this man?? His descriptions leave me in hysterics! You really must find a copy of this wonderful book! He loved Mexico and its people.
This is an oldie but goodie. Written in 1908 it still rings true today. Some parts -such as this- are utterly sublime. This passage is written about the advantages of living a solitary life.
I am very conflicted regarding how to rate this book. I think Minier put a tremendous amount of research into the writing of this book and it has some excellent moments. His sense of humor is delightful and it leavens the seriousness at just the right time. However, I just came away feeling the ending was very contrived. I think it is worth the read but I was disappointed at the end.
In Quebec City I, of course, had to visit the nearest independent bookstore. When Christian Vachon discovered (from my VERY elementary French) that I owned a bookstore in Wyoming he immediately took me over to show me his favorite mystery author--CJ Box! No barriers-we independents speak the same language and I have a new friend in Quebec City!
When on the train from Montreal to Quebec City one reads #thefrozendead.
This should keep me occupied for the day on airplanes!
Had the utter delight of meeting this author last week. He is humble, thoughtful, and astoundingly funny! So on this snowy night I am curled up with the Artful Dodger (Dodger for short) and this lovely book!
Just back from Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Fall Discovery Show with this gem of a memoir. The title says it all: at 25 Katie was riding her bike in NYC when in a freak accident she was literally run over by a Mack truck. (I suppose it could have been a Peterbilt, etc. She doesn't say.) Eight massive wheels rolled over her abdomen and yet she survived. This is her amazing, funny, and heartwarming story of her trek back to life.
Read this novel and you will find yourself in the dust bowl of Oklahoma fighting to stay on the land, loving your family yet needing something more to fill the void. Tragic and triumphant, Rae Meadows' spare prose will draw you in until you ARE Annie, Samuel, Birdie, Fred, and Jack.
Started this one which is next in my "60 at 60". Isn't this sentence just perfect?
Ok, I finally got this finished. (It has been a hectic summer.) Watson's writing is so moving that I fell in love with Calvin Sidey. As a consequence I hated the ending! Oh well, I will just make up my own!
This is a rare diversion into non-fiction for me but I love Tom Wolfe so am treating myself. What fun!!
My rep came by yesterday and said I have to read this. He usually knows what he's talking about! So far it is excellent!
I lost a good friend on Sunday. What a comfort to read these words today.
Set against the backdrop of the emerging Spanish Civil War and World War II, as well as London of the 1960's, Burton deftly explores themes of love, loyalty, and artistic gift. It is slow to start but as the lives entwine the mystery at its core builds and arrives at a surprising yet satisfying conclusion.
How have I missed this author before??
Event with this lovely author today. He has written a thoughtful, empathetic book about a woman born with a rare defect that precludes her from relationships of an intimate nature. It is a warm and loving story of a woman of strength and resilience based on an aunt of his. #BradWatson is an author to look for! This novel is not getting the attention it deserves.

Been driving a lot this summer so #libro has been my friend. This was a little slow for me to get into--maybe my sporadic listening was at fault--but I have an hour and a half left and am finding it hard to get out of the car! I did not read The Miniaturist but may go back and pick it up on the strength of this one!
