What Is Home, Mum?
What Is Home, Mum? | Sabba Khan
6 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
Sabba Khan's debut graphic memoir explores what identity, belonging and memory mean for her and her family against the backdrop of history. As a second-generation Pakistani migrant in East London, Khan paints a vivid snapshot of contemporary British Asian life and investigates the complex shifts experienced by different generations within migrant communities, creating an uplifting and universal story that crosses borders and decades. Race, gender and class are explored in a compelling and personal narrative, illuminated by an eloquent minimal style and architectural page design.

I found this a thoughtful exploration of the nature of identity and personhood, the tensions and balances between the individual and their place in a community, of the experience of belonging and being othered.
As a memoir, Khan's reflections include issues of culture, history, religion and irreligion, and patriarchy/feminism specific to her upbringing as a female, British South Asian Muslim, while her existential questions are universal. 5⭐

... race is a construct...
... class is a construct...
... gender is a construct.
Beneath it all we are quivering flesh.
Glistening in the sun.
Goose-pimpled in the moon.”

These are ☝️good books☝️, meaning I got them from the library rather than buying them! I have another three books on retail order, then I'm committed to not buying any more for at least two months. Maybe I should get a sticker book and award myself stars for not buying more books than I read 🤔🌟

vivastory Once you get so many stickers you should def reward yourself!....by getting a book 👍 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory Yep, yep; uha, uha; I'm down with that 😏📚 2y

Khan is asking some very difficult yet important questions in search of identity, independence and belonging. Vulnerable and thoughtful, this graphic memoir is definitely worth a read.

This City is anonymity. She swallows you whole... It's almost a gift, a cloak of invisibility...

Nute Ooooh, I hope that I can find this at the bookstore today! Thanks for showing pages from inside the book.🙂 3y
charl08 @Nute it's beautifully done, painfully honest at times. I hope she keeps writing, I would love to see what she does next. 3y
