Between 1880 and 1924, 4 million Italians immigrated and began to be “racially suspect.” They were barred from schools, film theaters, churches, and unions. like the Irish, they brought the ethnic divisions of the motherland with them, since Italians who met most prejudice were of Southern roots, similar to divisions between Protestant and famine Irish in the US.
