Four cousins navigate love, loss, and the meaning of family over the course of one memorable year in this heartfelt family drama. Cousins Mari, Erica, Selena, and Gracie are inseparable. They aren't just family but best friends--sharing secrets, traditions, and a fierce love for their abuelita. But their idyllic childhood ends when Mari's parents divorce, forcing her to move away. With Mari gone, the girls' tight-knit bond unravels. Fifteen years later, Mari's got the big house and handsome husband, but her life is in shambles. Erica's boyfriend just dumped her, and her new boss hates her. Selena can't seem to find her place in the world--not Mexican enough for her family, not white enough for her colleagues. And Gracie is a Catholic school teacher with an all-consuming crush, but she can't trust herself when it comes to romance. As rocky as the cousins' lives have become, nothing can prepare them for the heartbreaking loss of a loved one. When tragedy reunites them, will they remember their abuelita's lessons about family and forgiveness--or are fifteen years of separation too much to overcome?

This was a great story about a Mexican family and how each of the female cousins deal with the events brought to their lives. It‘s very relatable being a Latina myself. There was a lot of lines that made me smile and some that made me feel for the girls the stories were about. I totally recommend 👍🏻👍🏻 #kindleunlimited #winterreads #latinaauthors

Representing their Mexican heritage, and finding the love they each deserve in a partner are issues that plague them.
I felt like I was reading Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants meets Real Women Have Curves as these women tell their individual stories of searching. When I picked this book as a First Reads pick I didn‘t anticipate the love of this book that I found. Each woman has a specific trait that each woman can relate to.

What can I say except I LOVED this book! I went in expecting to connect most closely with Selena, the girl not Mexican enough for her family, but too white for work. I did, absolutely, but also found I connected and identified with ALL the Garcia cousins. And I swear, when they were making tamales on Christmas Eve, I could smell the masa and feel the hot, humid air of my mom‘s kitchen. So good. I can‘t wait to read more from this author.

Reggie There‘s this horror author V. Castro and there is this moment where the grandmother is in the back making tamales while her daughter is serving dominos pizza for her own daughter and her friends and it just hit that in between culture thing for me I‘ve often found myself in. This sounds great. Stacked. 2y
SoapboxEdits @Reggie Yes! These girls live in both worlds. If you enjoy stories about family, you‘ll enjoy this one. It surprises me that this topic doesn‘t come up more often, it‘s an important conversation! 2y

You want to read this. A great story of 4 Latina woman, all cousins, dealing with life. Their greatest support was their great grandma, called Welita. You will love the characters.

My choice of the Prime First Reads for August. Shamelessly picked for the rather lovely cover alone!

DivineDiana Thanks for the reminder to go see the Prime Reads offers! 2y
