Educating Esmé
Educating Esmé: Diary of a Teacher's First Year, Expanded Edition | Esmé Raji Codell
2 posts | 17 read | 7 to read
A must-read for parents, new teachers, and classroom veterans, Educating Esmé is the exuberant diary of Esmé Raji Codell’s first year teaching in a Chicago public school. Fresh-mouthed and free-spirited, the irrepressible Madame Esmé—as she prefers to be called—does the cha-cha during multiplication tables, roller-skates down the hallways, and puts on rousing performances with at-risk students in the library. Her diary opens a window into a real-life classroom from a teacher’s perspective. While battling bureaucrats, gang members, abusive parents, and her own insecurities, this gifted young woman reveals what it takes to be an exceptional teacher.  Heroine to thousands of parents and educators, Esmé now shares more of her ingenious and yet down-to-earth approaches to the classroom in a supplementary guide to help new teachers hit the ground running. As relevant and iconoclastic as when it was first published, Educating Esmé is a classic, as is Madame Esmé herself.

Wishing all the best to teachers and school librarians in the new school year. The tagged book is my favorite about teaching. I met Esme at a conference and we bonded over being the sole librarian for a Pre K - 12th grade school. #TeacherAppreciation #FallTreasures

I absolutely love this book, and it inspired me to be a better, more innovative teacher. That‘s how I found this app, actually! I‘m looking for a way to track independent reading without sucking all of the fun out of it. Would this app be a good fit for high school students? Do you have any other tips? #ELAteacher #teachersoflitsy #lovinglit

CoffeeNBooks Welcome to Litsy! 📚 I'm a teacher, too!! I teach 12th grade English and AP Literature. I hope you like it here- Litsy is a wonderful community!! 6y
Saknicole I think it would be fit for HS students, may just be time consuming to track if you have a ton of students participating. It would be fun extra credit though, like post a quote and picture a week or something associated to current class or nonclass reading! 6y

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Just a tip.... if you reply to someone's comment you need to add thier handle in your reply or they won't know you addressed them. (Unless you're talking to the person who made the original post. Ex. You will get a notification for this message, but if you want me to see your reply to need to add @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego to the comment) Litsy is a lil quirky that way. 📚⤠6y
