Wicked Game: The Ruthless Rivals
Wicked Game: The Ruthless Rivals | Kate Bateman
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
A Wicked Game marks the third book in Kate Bateman's popular regency romance series, Ruthless Rivals. If there's one thing impossible for a Davies to resist, it's a challenge from a Montgomery. . . A teasing bet. Shipwrecked and imprisoned thanks to an incorrect map, Captain Morgan Davies has returned to London to exact sweet revenge on the cartographer responsible for his suffering. He's also vowed to claim the winner's prize--three kisses--in the bet he made with his long-time nemesis, the prickly, smart-mouthed Harriet Montgomery. His incarceration has clarified his feelings for her, but convincing the infuriating woman he wants to marry her is going to be his greatest challenge yet. When Harriet's revealed to be the very mapmaker he seeks, Morgan decides to combine revenge and seduction into one delightful package. . . A dangerous enemy. Harriet's always wanted witty scoundrel Morgan, and now he's back; as handsome and as taunting as ever. She has enough on her plate dealing with her father's failing eyesight and a rival mapmaker copying her work to play wicked games with a dastardly Davies--however tempting he might be. But when a threat from Morgan's past puts them both in danger, Harry discovers that she and Morgan might not be enemies at all . . .

4 ⭐ I almost DNFed this book multiple times. There were times when it came to the map making shop, that things just didn‘t historically fit right with me based on all of other historical romance I have read in the past. And I don‘t know why I kept going back to it, but I did. I‘m glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this book once I got over whatever problem I had in the beginning. This is a typical historical romance. It‘s trophy, it‘s expected,

Kate Bateman is one of my favorite historical romance authors. The whole Ruthless Rivals series is absolutely delightful. Harriet and Morgan delight in tormenting each other, in this not quite enemies to lovers tale. There is plenty of sharp, witty banter (my favorite), no weird euphemisms, a little life-threatening adventure, and a baby-free epilogue. Practically perfect. 💖 Publishes 12/27/2022 Thx to NetGalley & St Martin‘s for the ARC.

This is third in the Ruthless Rivals series, and it was a good, solid addition for the most part. Harriet Montgomery has taken over her father‘s mapmaking business as his eyesight is failing. Morgan Davies has returned home from war as a naval captain. The Montgomerys and Davies have been feuding for generations (think Hatfields/McCoys), yet Harriet and Morgan have been hiding their true feelings from the other ever since they were young 🔻

This was a fun, humorous romance that was equally sweet and steamy in parts. The drawback for me was an added bit of danger from a villain that was such a minuscule part of the narrative that I didn‘t feel it had to be included. 🔻

robinb And also the storyline followed a fairly transparent path from start to finish. Bateman is at her best, in my opinion, when she‘s writing her love scenes. They involve a good mix of passion and tenderness and add a lot to the reader‘s grasp of the characters‘ motivations. I‘m enjoying this series. 4/5⭐️ (edited) 2y
julesG I think I should check out the author. Thanks for the review. 2y
robinb @julesG I began with her not all that long ago. I kept hearing good things. And while every one of the 5 of hers I‘ve read haven‘t been stellar, they‘ve been at least 3.5-5⭐️. Would love to hear your opinion if you check any out. 😊 2y
