Somewhere Beyond the Sea
Somewhere Beyond the Sea | Tj Klune
109 posts | 48 read | 2 reading | 29 to read
Featuring gorgeous orange sprayed edges! Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely-anticipated sequel to TJ Klune's TheHouse in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade. A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything. Arthur Parnassus lives a good life built on the ashes of a bad one. He's the master of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six dangerous and magical children who live there. Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. He is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department In Charge of Magical Youth. And there's the island's sprite, Zoe Chapelwhite, and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children. But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve. And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home--one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name that Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from--Arthur knows they're at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart. Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur's story. Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

I hit my reading goal!!

Cerulean Sea is my favorite book. So I was beyond excited to read this. Sadly, this wasn't quite the sequel I was hoping for. The magic and beauty that I loved about the first book, didn't really make it to this one.
The first half of the book was so funny and cute - the scene with Chauncey and Phee sitting on the stairs serving as lookout was so silly! Sal and Theodore - all the time.

It's always hard for a sequel to live up to expectations. Especially a book as beloved as The House in the Cerulean Sea. My favorite thing was seeing the Baker-Parnassus family being happy.

5🌟 Somehow Klune made this sequel even better than the first, and I absolutely adored the first. I laughed, I cried, and I was inspired. I adored this book and will place it with pride up on my shelf.

Did I love this as much as A House in the Cerulean Sea? No, not even close. Did I still enjoy it & was it a pick for me? Yes, absolutely! The pacing struggled somewhat & I understand all the reviews/comments about the preachy tone of Arthur, but I really love these characters—especially the kids & I loved being back in this world with them. I think given the election results that safe spaces are even more ⬇️

DebinHawaii … necessary & I think Klune captures that in these pages & his author notes. David, the newest character & kid to join the family was great & I liked seeing the character growth from the first book. AHITCS was pretty much perfect for me & any second book would struggle to be as good but I enjoyed this one & will pretty much read anything Klune writes. 💜💙💚💛🧡🤎🩵🖤🩷🌈 4w

I loved the first novel, but not this one. It felt like a 300+ page lecture to “educate“ the reader. It was honestly a slog to get through and somehow the magic of the first story was lost. The villains fell flat. The saccharine family relationships felt overplayed. Boo.

About six hours into the audiobook and I just couldn‘t take anymore of Arthur. I‘m bailing for now. Arthur feels so preachy, so condescending to an invisible audience (which must mean the reader), when he‘s talking about or to David the Yeti. I love David and I don‘t necessarily disagree with Arthur. I just don‘t like how it‘s done. Actions would speak louder than words here. Maybe I‘ll try again someday.

Traci1 Did you read House in the Cerulean Sea? If so, how did you feel about that one? I've not read this one yet, but I love Cerulean Sea and wonder how they compare. 1mo
Texreader @Traci1 I loved it! 1mo

Traci1 @Texreader hmm well that's disappointing then. I have it on my christmas wish list but maybe I'd be better to borrow it. 1mo
GingerAntics Arthur has a big phoenix moment in there one where he needs to burn. He‘s better after that. He was really struggling before that. Things get better with everyone after that. 1mo
Texreader @GingerAntics Did this occur again, after the appearance before the highest committee? 1mo
Texreader @Traci1 It really could have been the audiobook version turned me off. That‘s why I listened to it for so long hoping it was just the way it was being narrated. But the narration was good. It just got on my nerves. Perhaps the book is different. But looking at the reviews here on litsy I don‘t think I‘m alone. 1mo
GingerAntics @Texreader oh no, I was listening to the audio too, so I have no clue if the book is better or not. Yeah, the only thing about the narration that annoys me is his weird approach (possibly Canadian) to the word gazebo. 4w
GingerAntics @Texreader yeah! It happens back on the island. I think the new inspector is there. He literally flys out of their bedroom window and burns up. He ends up falling into the ocean and getting washed up on a far beach of the island. Linus comes and finds him. They sit on the beach all night while Arthur cries it out, then Arthur is back to his normal self. It‘s weird… 4w
GingerAntics @Texreader …It‘s like his phoenix self needs to do the death and rebirth thing, burn up and start over, and he‘s out of sorts until that happens. It‘s bigger and fierier than the highest committee hearing. I think the show at the hearing is sort of the first sign that he needs to regenerate, if you will. He gets worse and worse until he sort burns up and then he‘s better. 4w

Needed some post-election comfort, so chose to visit with several beloved characters via a reread of The House in the Cerulean Sea (on audio this time) …and then devoured the recently released sequel to stay with them a little longer.

The second book struggles a little with pace (and too much monologuing?), but it more than makes up for its technical or editorial misses with its big beautiful heart.

Hope to spend more time in Marsyas soon.

I can appreciate everything Klune wanted to and did say. I love that we got good times and times of growth with this family. I recognize that narrative tension rises as a result of finding the characters confronting circumstances the reader wants them to get out of, resulting in a stronger sense of triumph and release when difficulties are overcome. I think maybe my personal anxiety levels just wanted the badness to be over a little faster. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? With that acknowledged bias, from a plot and pacing perspective, I think the section where the family has cooked up future plans and seems to embark on a campaign of pranks against the inspector was unnecessary. After Arthur's discovery of the ultimate plans involving Lucy from the overheard beach discussion, after his needed outburst, he could have gone to Zoe and conspired with the kids, banished the inspector immediately 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? and still had the rest of the dominoes fall into place without drawing out time spent in proximity to a person who seems designed to make everyone miserable. An echo for real life people who don't seem to have any personal past that at least tangentially explains (like the interim director) why they have hate and prejudice, beyond being raised in a certain society and work climate, the inspector feels depressingly authentic, 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/? I guess it's a credit to the writing that I found every minute on page with her incredibly distressing. I'm glad for where the characters are at the end of the book, for the expansion of the sanctuary of magical people, the message of hope and change; I just felt so emotionally exhausted at the end, it made it harder to feel the joy and love that was so clear on the final pages. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 5/? I think if you've recently read The House on the Cerulean Sea and you want to see a bit more of Linus and Arthur's happily ever after with all the caveats that worldly concerns can bring, as well as spend more time with the kids, and enjoy their resilience and growth, you'll enjoy this. I think I may have felt a stronger attachment if I'd recently reread the first book in the duology. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 6/6 Under The Whispering Door remains my favourite TJ Klune, but I'm still up for trying whatever he comes out with next.

I love these characters with all my heart. All of them. Especially Sal and Chauncey, whom have both grown immensely from the first book. This book, unlike the first, was in Arthur‘s POV. Interesting choice, yet it worked as the focus was his past trauma affecting today‘s actions. Same as how it took a bit to get around Arthur‘s anger. Didn‘t like the ending- felt all over the place. Love the kids being kids; even on the mainland now.

Once again this Author brings me all the feels. I highly enjoyed this sequel! So much was relevant to today‘s global issues about hate and non- acceptance (which yes, was their point). However , there were some moments that I had to go back and listen to again , just to sit in the phrasing. Klune makes people think, speaks out and brings issues of hate in this world center stage while still bringing joy and beauty

The House in the Cerulean Sea was a balm when it came out, a hug in a dark time, so I had pretty high expectations of Somewhere Beyond the Sea.
Sadly, it didn't meet those expectations.
Instead of Linus on a journey of growth & discovery, the bad guys here are flat & 1-dimensional, with no possibility of redemption.
It felt like wish fulfillment: the bad guys--standing in for 2024 bad guys--existing only to be smashed down.
I missed the growth.

This might be a #unpopularopinion because I've only seen So-So ratings on this before. But I've become a political person, so I loved listening to Arthur and the whole rest is just as lovable and adoring as part one. But especially the afterword by Klune almost made me cry. I wish there was a safe-space like this somewhere in our world. Klune saw my fears, and that of many others, sees us and sends us a tight embrace. Exactly what I needed.

Why yes! Yes I did!

GingerAntics Why yes, I do have a cute little bookish island in the cerulean sea… and I do, in fact, wish I were there. 2mo
Traci1 Every few months I google to see if there's any update on a new AC game coming in the nearish future. I'm always disappointed. 2mo
GingerAntics @Traci1 I think they‘re all in on new horizons. They did a 2.0 update. I think they‘re just updating this one. They‘ve come up with some great story lines in this one, though. Just this morning I got the ability to literally change the island. I can build cliffs, move the rivers or get rid of them entirely. It‘s fun! 2mo
See All 11 Comments
GingerAntics @Traci1 I just heard some interesting news that Nintendo seems to be doing a final push with New Horizons before releasing a new came in the franchise next year. Fingers crossed. I‘m trying to figure out what the next thing to do with New Horizons might be (though, admittedly I‘ve only been playing it off and on for about a year, so I‘ve spent way less time with it than a lot of other people). 2mo
GingerAntics @Traci1 I literally just finished “plan K” yesterday (Monday), and then it ran the credits, so I‘m kind of wondering if that was the end of the official story line? I dunno. Now I have to find this dude to open a cafe in the bleeding museum. No clue, anymore. I wouldn‘t mind a new game either. 2mo
Traci1 Oh, the Cafe is great. I love Brewster. The credits are sort of the end of the beginning. It basically opens up the ability to do everything in the game. If you have the Happy Home Paradise DLC, there's more to do there as well. 2mo
GingerAntics @Traci1 I was debating the DLC. I didn‘t know until I went digging that they haven‘t updated ACNH since 2022… I didn‘t even start playing it until then. 2mo
GingerAntics @Traci1 so the big announcement was that pocket camp is become pocket camp complete. So now there is an entire game on your phone. Still no further update for NH and no way to play PCC on switch, so that kind of sucks. I‘m not sure I want to play a complete game on AC on my phone. 2mo
Traci1 I downloaded pc to my phone because there were a few items that you'd be able to buy from the abd machine in resident services if you did (like a campsite sign which is adorable), but i never played it. I think a new AC won't be brought out until the next nintendo console comes out. I'm just hoping that it does eventually happen. 2mo
GingerAntics @Traci1 I‘m kind of hoping they‘re not going to wait that long. Nintendo has invested way too much into the switch, and moving to something else (not just an improvement on the switch) would really piss people off. It‘s not like they have really finished ACNH. It‘s kind of annoying that they are doing PCC and there is still a bunch just hanging there in NH. It‘s actually kind of annoying. I dunno. 2mo
GingerAntics @Traci1 I played PC for a while. I didn‘t have a switch at the time, so I never knew about that small connection. Now they‘re wanting to change $20 for an app, another $25 for the DLC. NH was like $50 or $60. It‘s like they don‘t care about the game itself anymore. I dunno. Maybe it‘s just me. I‘ve considered picking up PC again, but I‘m leaning towards not going to, because the whole social aspect is being removed, so I don‘t see the point. 2mo

This much anticipated sequel was just as lovely as I expected. The children‘s antics were hilarious, “I can talk to cauliflower and I‘ve named the all Peggy.” Chauncey might be my favorite because he takes things literally and is unapologetically himself all the time. Book #94 in 2024

Please don‘t come for me, but I think this suffered from sophomore slump. Maybe it‘s simply because House was SUCH an absolute winner and really big shoes to fill. For me, this one didn‘t have the same level of humor. I wanted more antics from the kids to show depth, wit, and sarcasm. Linus‘ internal thoughts were such a great part of Book 1, and that same line was missing for me. Disjointed, tacking too much, not the same, but still worth it.

Ladygodiva7 People will say what a eh book or crummy movie and I still want to read it/see it. Never deterred me 😁 2mo
DGRachel I think this is why I‘ve been hesitant to pick this up. I will. Eventually. But Cerulean was the first book in 40+ years of reading that I could truly call my desert island, “if you could only read one book for the rest of your life” book 2mo

This may be an #unpopularopinion, but I did not love this book. House in The Cerulean Sea is my favorite book and I was hoping to recapture the warm hug feeling I get while reading it. This book has little glimpses of that, but overall felt really heavy-handed. Klune had a lot to say apparently and I wholeheartedly agree with his message but it felt like a lot of the book was just Arthur talking at people. The kids are the best part of the story.

If a book series could be wrapped inside a warm hug, the Cerulean chronicles would be its result. Each child of Authur and Linus is pure delight and I can‘t pick a favorite or least favorite - and that includes the new addition of a yeti. However, this story is told with a heavier hand than the first installment which conflicts with its joy. But then I read the author‘s note so now I am hard pressed to fault the weight of this author‘s ✍️.

I liked the cover…and that‘s about it. The messaging was heavy-handed & overt from the beginning, ripped from the headlines & repeated endlessly. I don‘t mind messages/politics in a book but I do mind when characters are utilized wholly in service of that message rather than staring in their own compelling story that might ALSO have something to say, when the message is more important then the story. Underwhelming and very disappointing.

“The House in the Cerulean Sea” is one of my favorite books of all time, so when “Somewhere Beyond the Sea” was announced, I was equally part ecstatic that there was a sequel and part leery that the sequel wouldn‘t be as good as the first. I didn‘t need to worry, as this book is absolutely everything. I adored everything about it, and there aren‘t enough words to express how much I love this book and series.

I‘m finding the political messaging a little heavy-handed, and it sometimes takes me out of the story. I‘m trying to just let that wash over me, though, because I LOVE Cerulean Sea and have been looking forward to this sequel for months. 💗💗

bookandbedandtea I find that happening more and more in current books and I'm not a fan. Between social media, the news, and real life conversations I feel bombarded by politics. Even when I agree with the message, which I assume I would in Klune's case, I'd rather authors keep politics out of their stories. Reading, to me, has always been an escape from the nonsense of the world and I don't appreciate losing that escape. 😟 3mo

Pickpick

High pick! I enjoyed it so much that I “had to“ buy a “reading copy“ in addition to the beautiful signed indie bookstore edition. I'll probably buy the audio, as well. [review to come]
