New York Times Editors' Choice Longlisted for the International Booker Prize What makes us who we are? And why do we lead one life and not another? Asle, an ageing painter and widower who lives alone on the southwest coast of Norway, is reminiscing about his life. His only friends are his neighbour, sleik, a traditional fisherman-farmer, and Beyer, a gallerist who lives in the city. There, in Bjrgvin, lives another Asle, also a painter but lonely and consumed by alcohol. Asle and Asle are doppelgngers--two versions of the same person, two versions of the same life, both grappling with existential questions about death, love, light and shadow, faith and hopelessness. The three volumes of Jon Fosse's Septology--The Other Name, I is Another, and A New Name--collected in for the first time in this limited hardcover edition, are a transcendent exploration of the human condition, and a radically other reading experience--incantatory, hypnotic, and utterly unique.

Is this a good start to a book? The first 11 pages are a single paragraph and except where he asks himself a question, approximately once per page, it‘s one long sentence. Ok…

jdiehr That's a no for me 10mo
thegreensofa Oh wow, you will run out of breath! 10mo
Jari-chan That's Fosse's style as I had to learn. I got used to it, but it takes a lot of effort. 10mo

LeafingThroughLife That looks….exhausting. 10mo
Liz_M Coming from someone that loves Saramago's lack of punctuation and Ducks, Newburyport, this is a good sign 😁 10mo
AnneCecilie I‘ve heard this is not the best Fosse to start with. That his trilogy is better, if not some of his shorter works. But I‘m not sure about how much is translated into English. But I‘m curious to how you find it. 10mo
