███████ beautiful.
For such a short story there is a lot going on here! The slice of story that was shared was captivating and dramatic. I greedily want a fleshed out novel of these characters and circumstances. But my favorite aspect of this novella is the censorship of language. The words chosen to be excised are not always the ones that inflict the most damage. ⬇️
I always enjoy PN's writing & this one is no exception. A short, illustrated novella featuring 4 teenage school boys, negotiating friendships, sexuality & prejudice. It's an insightful & authentic look at some of the issues faced by young gay boys in the face of toxic masculinity AND the hormones & emotions of the teenage years. While this is a complete story in itself, it would've been great expanded into a full length novel as well.
Ooh, new Patrick Ness! Starting this one tonight. With thanks to #NetGalley for this book.
#rsomarch2023 #currentlyreading #illustratedbook #patrickness is always out to challenge us and to make us think about #lgbtqia+ issues. But he‘s also full of humanity and genuine care for young people. Love his work.
