Winter Guest: A Mystery
Winter Guest: A Mystery | W C Ryan
3 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
A haunting, atmospheric mystery set against a country divided, by the author of A House of Ghosts. January 1921. Though the Great War is over, in Ireland a new civil war is raging. The once-grand Kilcolgan House, a crumbling bastion shrouded in sea mist, lies half empty and filled with ghosts, both real and imagined, while it shelters the surviving members of the Prendeville family. Then, when an IRA ambush goes terribly wrong, Maud Prendeville, Lord Kilcolgan's eldest daughter, is killed, leaving the family reeling. Yet the IRA column behind the attack insists they left her alive, that someone else must be responsible for her terrible fate. Captain Tom Harkin, an IRA intelligence officer and Maud's former fianc, is sent to investigate. He becomes an unwelcome guest in this strange, gloomy household. Working undercover, Harkin must delve into the house's secrets--and discover where, in this fractured, embattled town, allegiances truly lie. But Harkin too is haunted by the ghosts of the past and by his terrible experiences on the battlefields. Can he find the truth about Maud's death before the past--and his strange, unnerving surroundings--overwhelm him? The Winter Guest is a gripping and immersive read for fans of classic mysteries by the likes of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers along with Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge series, Ann Cleeves, and Jacqueline Winspear.

The blurb for this book did it a disservice. I went in expecting a country house Christmas murder mystery and well I didn't get that.

It wasn't a gothic novel either which the blurb also promised. It was a decent historical novel with a mystery and some ghosts but I found it quite underwhelming.

Andrew65 Sounds disappointing. Another book finished though 🎄🎄🎄 1y

TheAromaofBooks I was really hoping you would love this one because I love the cover 😂 I am surprised at how often I find that blurbs don't match the actual story, which leads to me not enjoying a book I may have otherwise liked, just because I was in the mood for what the blurb promised, not what the book actually was, if that makes sense haha 1y
PuddleJumper @TheAromaofBooks Makes complete sense. Sometimes I wonder if I would have enjoyed a book if I didn't have expectations of what it was about. It is annoying when the blurb seems to describe a completely different book 1y

BookmarkTavern It‘s always disappointing when the blurb sets up something completely different than what you get. 1y

Pickpick

It's an engrossing read about a period of history I'm not that familiar with, & it really conveys the horrors of the Great War & how those who fought were affected for years afterwards. It also deals with the Anglo-Irish conflict (1919-1921), the fallout from which lingers even today. 4🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Bonnier Books UK/Zaffre, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
