How to Walk a Puma
How to Walk a Puma: And Other Things I Learned While Stumbling Through South America | Peter Allison
7 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
The author, who is afraid of refrigerators and staying in any one place for too long, details his hilarious, yet hair-raising adventures in the jungles of South America where he makes daily observations on the humid climate, strange encounters and the nature of nomadism. Original.

Peter Allison was a former long-time African safari guide who despised his desk job. So he decided he needed to travel and admire wildlife in South America. First stop was to spend a month volunteering on an animal reserve. He chose to help tend Roy the puma. Sold as a cub, Roy‘d never be rewilded so to help keep him as wild as possible, a volunteer ropes himself to Roy and gives him the run of the jungle. It‘s absolutely brutal and he became ⬇️

Texreader Roy‘s chew toy. Then he spends months on many adventures in different countries. The last was living with an Amazon tribe thick in the jungle for 3 weeks. The author is continuously self-deprecating describing his personal misadventures, making this an often laugh-out-loud experience. I enjoyed it very much. #readingtheamericas

I‘m in a hotel for a stressful meeting in the a.m. I‘m delivering news to a client with survey results about the workplace culture, which had a lot of bad news. I worried way too much until this afternoon when I realized there was a lot of positive news as well. So I made a list of all the great things the client is doing, and then we‘ll discuss ways to improve. I‘m reading loads tonight to try to destress. Here are my current reads. Wish me luck!

Andrew65 Best of luck for tomorrow 😁 11mo
Texreader @Andrew65 Thank you. I‘m really so nervous. I made the CEO promise me he‘d be upbeat about this. He‘s a negative nelly and I fear he‘s just going to make excuses when there‘s so much opportunity here. Geez, I don‘t want to sound desperate with him. I‘m just the employment attorney. But there‘s so much to gain for his employees!! 11mo
Bookwormjillk Good luck! I work in market research so I‘ve been there. Focusing on the opportunity is a good call. You got this! 11mo

Bookwomble I hope your meeting went well 🙂 11mo
Texreader @Bookwomble I felt like I came under fire quite a bit but it seems the CEO and I are in an even better place—ready to tackle the issues. 11mo
Bookwomble @Texreader Good outcome! 😊 11mo
Texreader @Bookwomble Thanks for checking in. It was so stressful. And I‘m very proud of this CEO. He is somewhat part of the problem but I‘m giving him lots of suggestions to mitigate his problem behaviors. 11mo

I‘m almost finished with this book and I don‘t want to miss an opportunity to share the author‘s humor. He‘s spending some nights alone in the Amazon, and to help him go to sleep he‘s listing all the things that could kill him. This description of the lethal snakes 🐍 is just great. The “Roy” he mentions is a Puma he volunteered to care for for a month when he first arrived in South America, and what a wild ride that was. #readingtheamericas

Are pessimists happier than optimists? Hmmm. Food for thought.

This was my book of choice today while undergoing vestibular testing this morning. Anyone else ever do this? After a lifetime of motion sickness, headaches, dizziness, and tinnitus, I can chalk today‘s tests in my top 2 worst physical experiences of my life. Still recovering. Can anyone tell me if there‘s an upside? 🙏🏻

Needless to say I read about 1 sentence in chapter 9. It‘s very interesting.

Sapphire I don‘t know what vestibular testing is, but I hope you are feeling yourself again quickly. 11mo
ravenlee Did you have to do the Barany chair? I had several sessions of that when I was in the Air Force but having motion sickness. After a week straight of daily spins, I tapped out. It wasn‘t helping, it made me feel airsick on the ground, and it made me feel sick constantly for the entire week, even when I wasn‘t in the chair. My story didn‘t end well for my career, and I still have motion sickness with no explanation or remedy. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
Texreader @ravenlee One test is very similar I think to the Barany chair. I was put in a pitchdark tube and spun both directions in a chair causing a panic attack, a scream, and fierce crying. They had to skip that test for me. It was the worst of the day. But further tests made me wickedly sick and I‘m still dealing with the side effects. So sorry for your experience and its impact on your career. That‘s so sad. Motion sickness is horrific. 11mo

Texreader @Sapphire Thank you. I‘m hoping a good night‘s rest will solve the problems, but I‘m afraid it was so bad I‘ll have lingering side effects from the memories/flashbacks 11mo
Bookwormjillk Wow @Texreader I hope something good comes out of all that, and that you feel better today. 11mo
ravenlee That sounds horrible. I‘m so sorry you had to go through it. I hope you at least get some sort of answers. I‘ve been afraid to seek any follow-up (my experience was in 2006) because I‘m afraid of this kind of testing. I wish you the very best in recovery and good luck in the outcome. 11mo
Aimeesue Sorry you had to go through what basically sounds torturous to me. Hope it helps them figure things out for you. 11mo
