Save What's Left: A Novel | Elizabeth Castellano
3 posts | 4 read | 4 to read
An outrageously funny debut novel about a woman who moves to what's meant to be her dream home after her marriage disintegrates . . . only to find herself embroiled in the trials and tribulations that come with owning a beach house. When Kathleen Deane's husband, Tom, tells her he's no longer happy with his life and their marriage, Kathleen is confused. Who said anything about being happy? They live in Kansas, for goodness' sake! But with Tom off finding himself, Kathleen starts to think about what she wants. And her thoughts lead her to a small beach community on the east coast, a town called Whitbey that has always looked lovely in the Christmas cards her childhood friend Josie sends every year. It turns out, though, that life in Whitbey is nothing like Josie's Christmas cards. Kathleen's new neighbor, Rosemary, is cantankerous, and the town's supervisor won't return Kathleen's emails, but worst of all is the Sugar Cube, the monstrosity masquerading as a holiday home that Kathleen's absentee neighbors are building next door to her quaint (read: tiny) cottage. As Kathleen gets more and more involved in the fight against the Sugar Cube and town politics overall, she realizes that Whitbey may not be a fairytale, but it just might be exactly what she needed.

I loved this book! It‘s funny and clever. Kathleen‘s marriage falls apart (not so funny!) and when she moves to a cute and quaint beach town to start a new chapter in her life she discovers that everything is NOT as she expected. Kathleen shares her candid insights about town gossip, beach town life, and friendships in a cantankerous and humorous style. In the end it‘s the story of housing, bad neighbors, zoning regulations, and second chances.

This is a satire about a woman who moves to a town she‘s never visited after her husband leaves her. Things get pretty silly as she becomes more and more obsessed with the management of this beach town, where a giant house had been allowed to be built beside her small cottage. The moral of the story is don‘t move somewhere sight unseen! It was fun enough to read but a little repetitive so this is a soft pick. This was my #BookSpin for July

This was the GMA Book Club pick for July and I really enjoyed it. To be honest it triggered my anxiety reading about all of the things going on in this little beach town but I enjoyed following the characters and how the issues were resolved. This was a fun read.
