The Road: A Story of Romans and Ways to the Past
The Road: A Story of Romans and Ways to the Past | Christopher Hadley
2 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
Have you ever heard the march of legions on a lonely country road? For two thousand years, the roads the Romans built have determined the flow of ideas and folktales, where battles were fought and where pilgrims trod. Almost everyone in Britain lives close to a Roman road, if only we knew where to look.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Trying to follow a small section of Roman Road, Hadley takes us on a journey back and forth across time. I loved the mix of accessible history, challenging of prior assumptions, observing nature and literary influences. It‘s peppered with quotes from historians, playwrights, diarists and more - giving a a really broad and culturally involved view of the road as both metaphor and real object. Got me thinking!

Aimeesue That's a great cover! 2y
