Millie Bobby Brown's dazzling debut novel is a moving tale of love, longing, and loss, inspired by the true events of her family's experience during World War II.Love blooms in the darkest days...It's 1942, and London remains under constant threat of enemy attack as the second world war rages on. In the Bethnal Green neighborhood, Nellie Morris counts every day lucky that she emerges from the underground shelters unharmed, her loving family still surrounding her.Three years into the war, she's grateful to hold onto remnants of normalcy--her job as assisting the mayor and nights spent at the local pub with her best friend. But after a chance encounter with Ray, an American airman stationed nearby, Nellie becomes enchanted with the idea of a broader world.Just when Nellie begins to embrace an exciting new life with Ray, a terrible incident occurs during an air raid one evening, and the consequences are catastrophic. As the truth about that night is revealed, Nellie's world is torn apart. When it seems all hope is lost, Nellie finds that, against all odds, love and happiness can triumph.Nineteen Steps is a deeply affecting, mesmerizing page-turner inspired by the author's family history. An epic story of longing, loss, and secrets, Millie Bobby Brown's propulsive debut introduces an unforgettable, brave young woman and boldly portrays the strength in the power of love.

Pickpick

Such a good story, even if it was a little predictable. I‘m trying to determine if the trampling in the subway vacation site actually happened. Either way, it was a horrific part of the story. The characters were all likable, and the female protagonist was very strong. I read this book as part of the Goodreads 52 week challenge- written by a ghostwriter. I may have not run across it otherwise, but am glad that I did.

My Spotify membership now allows 15 hours a month of audiobooks. Yay! So I randomly chose this as my first one and I have to say the narration alone is delightful. I have other reading to do, but I didn‘t want to stop listening to her voice. So far the story is engaging. Looking forward to chapter 2.

Tamra Wow, and no holds/waits! My husband has a subscription & now I‘m jealous. 12mo
Cuilin @Tamra I know!! I didn‘t know it was coming. I opened up my phone and there it was. 12mo
Bookwormjillk Didn't realize she reads it herself. That's cool! 12mo
MissyD Ohh o wonder if my Spotify account allows that. 🏃🏻‍♀️. Off to check 12mo

I tried to read this one and just can't. While I understand that ghost writing is a thing, the actual author of this story, Kathleen McGurl, shared on her blog that Millie gathered research, put together family history and some plot ideas, and then Kathleen wrote the first draft and did the bulk of the work. And yet, this is being praised as Millie's debut novel. ⬇️

wordslinger42 Obviously, McGurl knew what she was agreeing to, and that was her choice, but it bothers me to see how quick the publisher was to make her role seem secondary and small -- when there would, in fact, be no book without her -- all because they knew Millie's name would sell more books. I understand that this is not an uncommon thing, but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. 1y
