Menno Moto
Menno Moto: A Journey in Search of Identity | Cameron Dueck
5 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
In the 1920s, the most radical Mennonites--fearing a loss of autonomy--moved from Canada to Latin America, where they built colonies, keeping their doors and minds closed for nearly a century against the rest of the sinful world. They live as if time has stood still, with their clothes, farms and their outlook unchanged for centuries, and this isolation bears dark social consequences. Seeking answers in an eight-month, 45,000 km solo motorcycle journey across the Americas, Cameron Dueck finds reasons to both love and loathe the identity he searched for.

The author, a Mennonite (or anabaptist), traveled via motorbike from his birthplace in #Canada to #Argentina stopping at Mennonite settlements along the way. First, a number of practices and beliefs are similar to how I was raised as a Baptist but I‘d never associated them with religion. That was very eye-opening. The author, now a very modern resident of Hong Kong, seemed hypercritical of the people he met and their ways. But eventually he ⬇️

Texreader was able to recognize the Mennonite ways deep in his own personality. This book definitely faced Mennonites in all its forms. Even more eye-opening and downright scary were the mass rapes in the community in #Bolivia. The uneducated population are kept that way to ensure they maintain their old ways, but also left the women without the understanding to say what had happened to them. Tragic. An excellent coverage of many Central & South ⬇️ (edited) 1y

Texreader @Bookwormjillk I agree. I love the challenges for introducing me to books I wouldn‘t have read. And I learned a lot from this one! 1y

Texreader @Librarybelle @OrangeMooseReads Well, first things first, I‘ll have to figure out what a Mennonite is. I‘ve come across the term in some of the books I‘ve read for #readingtheamericas so now it‘s my chance to learn who they are. 2y
Bookwormjillk @Texreader he gives a good background. Enjoy! 2y

Journalist Cameron Dueck decided to ride his motorcycle from Canada to Argentina to better understand his Mennonite roots. I had no idea there were so many Mennonite settlements across North and South America, and the stories of how they came to be were pretty interesting. They weren‘t all flattering either. #ReadingTheAmericas #FoodAndLit #Canada #Paraguay #Mexico #Bolivia #Argentina

Librarybelle I did not know that either! 2y
Texreader Interesting! I think I‘ll listen to it next! 2y
BarbaraBB Such an interesting subject. I traveled by train through the US a few years ago and was fascinated by the many Mennonites. 2y
