Beka reflects on the tumultuous past few months, beginning with her failure to pass the term, on her penchant for lying, the stories of “befo time” and political unrest, her great-gran‘s death and wake, a hurricane, and most troubling, the gulf widening between them as Troycie‘s inability to cope with ruinous events causes a breakdown. Beka‘s intelligence and contrariness see her (and the reader) through what could have been just a miserable tale.

Starting the year off a little slowly, only reading these two books. And I haven't finished anything recently.

My initial book for #Belize didn‘t work out and, quite frankly, I‘m so glad, because I loved this one! It starts as a history of jaguars and humans and how they influenced one another then evolves into the modern science of jaguar study, Rabinowitz‘s area of expertise. Riveting book; he did wonderful work.

Headed off to a book written in the 1940s for my #Belize book for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

This was the first one of this classic fiction series that I have read, and I have to say that it was a fun read. Plenty of action and japes in the jungle that Biggles and his companions get them self into. Fast action and fun reading. A bit dated but still didn‘t spoil the read.

Librarybelle Wow! What an awesome find! 13mo
LeahBergen I always see Biggles books when I‘m hunting for vintage editions and wonder what they‘re like! 13mo
Andrew65 @LeahBergen Based on this very much fun, light reads. This one wasn‘t set during the war so those ones might be slightly different. All action as opposed to character driven and obviously Biggles is the hero of these times. 13mo
Andrew65 @Librarybelle Managed to find a website where you could download a pdf of it. 13mo

I enjoyed reading about Levison Wood walking across Central America. I recognized many places from when I traveled those countries myself in the 90s (by bus, not walking 😉). The book is more about the traveling than the visited places though.

Ticking off many prompts for #ReadingTheAmericas23: #Mexico #Belize #Guatemala #Honduras #CostaRica #Panama #Colombia 🇲🇽 🇧🇿 🇬🇹 🇭🇳 🇨🇷 🇵🇦 🇨🇴

I enjoyed this book. It wasn‘t suspenseful. It wasn‘t overly humorous. But it was just a nice easy literary fiction read. #SummerEndReadathon book #10

While I admired Teddy Roosevelt after reading The River of Doubt, I‘m pretty ticked off with him for his aggression in Central America. Of course the Panama Canal is vital for many reasons, not least of which its value to Panama, but to take the land by force and Roosevelt‘s aggressive Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine are reprehensible. #readingtheAmericas #Belize

I just finished the first chapter with short histories of each of the 7 countries covered in this book. It‘s really well done and I‘ve learned a ton about our neighbors to the south. So I was quite disappointed to see the short history about #Nicaragua with pretty blatant typos, referencing #CostaRica. 😟

Even though I‘ve read books for all the countries in this book for #readingtheAmericas, I‘m going to try to read this one even if I just skim it.
