I struggled to separate my complaints about the audiobook from how much I liked or disliked the actual writing. Zimmerman did a great job reading his own words. I enjoyed the sound of his voice. However, there was no distinct, audible cue for when one essay ended & another began. This was a huge problem for me. It erased my ability to notice the intentional craft behind each piece. From what I could tell, I think I'd prefer the author's stand-up.

monalyisha This was on-brand for my particular taste: humor informed by a religious education (and the critique of it) - especially poignant when coming from an ex-evangelical, gay, vegan atheist. Some of Zach's commentary made me pause, though, not knowing from whence it was borne, e.g. “My politics have evolved as such that I no longer attend Pride parades.“ Why? What does that mean? I need to know more before I can laugh in earnest! 10mo

A combo of memoir and comic pieces, largely about the internal conflicts of being gay and growing up Evangelical in the South. I think my favorite bit may have been about God creating the world while working for a ruthlessly capitalistic heaven, but many parts had me laughing out loud or close to tears.

Do get the audio if you can; I suspect his work loses something on the page.

Delightful, funny, super-quick read. Loved Zimmerman‘s voice on the page and narrating the audio (available on hoopla). Hope he writes more books!

If you like David Sedaris, you will like this book. Trauma stories of growing up and coming out with an evangelical family told in a way that makes you chuckle. A good dose of dry humor to help the medicine go down.

Folks, this is a 3 hour audio and it‘ll make you chuckle. I didn‘t know a thing about Zach Zimmerman (a comedian) prior to reading this but I want to know more about his work! This is an essay collection about growing up from southern conservative carnivore roots to becoming the gay vegetarian atheist he is today. Olive Garden features prominently. I lol-ed many times. It‘s that great type of dark humor that grew from painful experiences.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I hadn‘t heard of this book, but grabbed it discounted from my local indie as it sadly just closed. 😭 The owner moved out of state, and no one stepped in to take it over. Wish I could have, but I digress. I really enjoyed this personal essay collection! Zimmerman is a funny, fantastic storyteller, and I often found him relatable. Loved his clever lists, too. Just wish this had been longer!
