I‘m glad I found this trail guide in my local bookstore. It brought to my attention the history of the outlet between Keuka and Seneca lakes, once brimming with mills which ran parallel to the Crooked Lake Canal. The author points out where you can see evidence of the locks, etc., and I love the tips about plant identification and birds/animals to keep an eye out for. The trail has reignited my interest in nature- I‘m glad to have this resource.

Bookwomble Sounds like it's enriching your walk 😊 1y

The memorial is a good vantage point from which to view the falls…As you look upstream, the stone walls in front of you on the right along the water‘s edge mark the site of the large paper mill built here in 1884. The stone blocks used to build this structure and the dam were salvaged from the abandoned flight of four locks that once carried the Canal around the falls.

Relaxing with a local trail guide. The movers haven‘t delivered our stuff yet, so I‘ve got beer in a paper cup, and I‘m sitting on the couch, the only piece of furniture in my new apartment so far. Finn is still upset with me, and he‘s decided he‘ll begrudgingly sit next to me. But hey- I‘m learning about local wildlife/history, I‘m comfortable, and I have a roof over my head. Life is good!
