This was mis-marketed. It's classed as YA, described as queer teenage fantasy, and has a very bright cover.

It's middle grade, maybe the younger end of YA, but the writing is juvenile and the characters are unlikeable.

There's darker themes that I wasn't expecting and they weren't explored well. There's a forced outing scene as well.

If I knew this was middle grade I wouldn't have picked it up.

Steven is seventeen and has big issues that are wrecking his life.
He can‘t control his emotions in certain situational and this always ends in catastrophe.
For instance when he first kissed a boy his head LITERALLY exploded!
Terrified of causing more damage or injuring anyone else he runs away to a place called Grunsby on sea.
But a strange organisation called DEMA is on his case and they want to neutralise.
So where does he run to now?

Steven is only seventeen yet he seems to have the weight of the world on his shoulders as he has some weird, secret powers, that aren't Erm postivie.
For instance his first kiss with a boy made his head explode.
Terrified at what he caused and that he killed someone he runs away and goes to a place called Grunsby on sea.
He thinks he can avoid people and not cause them anymore harm as his emotions are causing him to do things he can't control.

Well what a thrill ride this was. The plot is quite a quick build up to a really great ending. I love a good showdown. This is the first in a trilogy and i definitely want more. I love Steven and his attempts to protect those around him. We then have the best friend who is sassy and amazing. Add in the typical grumpy boyfriend and the cute love interest and you have a story. This does give me Carry On by Rainbow Rowell vibes.
