The Language of Kin
The Language of Kin: A Novel | Lynne Hugo
1 post | 1 read | 3 to read
From the award-winning author of A Matter of Mercy and The Testament of Harold's Wife, comes a beautifully written exploration of how the language of healing can transcend seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Eve, a chimpanzee orphaned by poachers and used for experiments in a medical lab, can finally lead a new life. When she arrives at the Dayton Zoo, Kate and Marc must overcome professional differences to build a relationship with her. Forced to work together, Kate and Marc find common ground when they discover they both are the sole caregivers for their mothers, one who has been deaf her entire life and the other who recently lost her ability to process words. After a life-threatening crisis occurs, can they find the courage--and the shared language--to reach across these silent divides to heal the ones they love?

Wow! What can I say? If that cover didn't already grab you, then the story certainly will! The story of Eve (a traumatizedresearch chimp), the story of Kate and Marc (zoo employees where Eve us sent) and the story of their Mother's, Ria and Dorothy. Parallel stories about communication and relationships. Human and animal. This book has it all! It's a fictionalized story that reads like it could be non fiction. The research that(cont in comments)..

TheHeartlandBookFairy must have gone into this book is just incredible! This is an intense story filled with likable (and some unlikable characters), wonderful character and relationship development, and a plot that will keep you reading and not be able to put this book down! I'm not quick to hand out 5 star but this one definitely qualifies! 1y
