I read this years ago, and it remains an all time favorite of mine. The story was powerful to me, and I loved how it spans characters and time periods. Bernice has a smooth pen from which the words flow just beautifully. I‘ve read many titles of her‘s since. She‘s earned her place as one of my favorite authors. I feel like I know of a secret treasure in that, most people don‘t know of her works.

This started off with a strong narrative that sucked me in. But with the introduction of each new character and time period, the storyline begins to feel choppy and disjointed. Ostensibly, the book is about the murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi in 1955, but Emmett really does not make an appearance until quite late in the book. I kept waiting for that moment when all the elements and characters would be pulled together, but it never happens.

This book was a wonderful surprise. I found it on Libby and had no idea what to expect but I really loved it. The story is haunting, and the truth behind it is a part of our history too many people refuse to deal with. Reading it in this context and in conjunction with some of the other books I‘ve read this month had an affect on me that the history books never came close to having.

This was well done. It was emotional, spiritual and an all around surreal experience. I really enjoyed the way it was narrarated and how the story unfolded. It is a sad coincidence that this novel depicts the death of Emmitt Till and I'm reading it days after the 61st anniversary of his death. This could have happened in any small town in America. #readingthrough30

Notafraidofwords When I read this book my mind was blown away. 8y

TheNextBook @Marchpane @Notafraidofwords Yeah, this book is pretty damn good. @BookishFeminist I feel like this is a book you would like. The writing is really good. The story deals with different elements of race and relationship. I'm really upset I have to leave for work son because I don't want to put it down. 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook I think you're right- I'm going to see if the library has it, as if I don't already have enough to read right now 😭 it looks too good to pass up though. I hope you can come home and relax with it later! 8y
TheNextBook @BookishFeminist that is the plan! You'd breeze through this. This is definitely a book you could finish in one sitting. I'm considering sliding this in my purse and taking it with me. Just in case, you know, free time 😉 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook I mean there's always covert bathroom breaks 💅🏼💅🏼 8y

My choice for #underhypedbook is Gathering of Waters.

It's the tale of Money, Mississippi, from the Great Flood of 1927 through to Hurricane Katrina, following the lives of the townsfolk and narrated by Money itself. There's a little magic realism (very subtle) too.

Recommended for fans of Homegoing and the work of Toni Morrison.

(Edited because @Litsy found the book for me. Thanks 👏☺️).
