Lyrical and bittersweet novel following three generations of Japanese/Japanese-American women in pre-WWII Japan. I learned so much from this story, which is one of my favorite things about historical fiction.

Had to DNF at 67%.
The book is beautifully written but the format is quite eccentric. It‘s made to be something known as an I-story which is like a memoir & a personal journal. Because of the various shifts in tone & subject matter, mostly without much notice, it can be difficult to focus on. It‘s a book you really need to devote yourself to & with my ADHD being pretty bad recently, I had to put it aside. One day I WILL finish it.
No rating.
This is so eloquent and beautiful. I‘m awed completely.

I just began reading The Strangeness of Beauty. It‘s an #OwnVoices JPN-Am historical fiction novel. I really like the set-up. The MC is the narrator & the book is written in an autobiographic style. The prose is also very lovely & vivd.
It‘s about a girl who raises her sister‘s daughter after she passes in Seattle. Circumstances take them back to their samurai home & family in Japan, taking them up to & thru WWII.
