Ukraine
Ukraine | Artem Chapeye
1 post | 1 to read
A stunning debut collection of fiction and creative nonfiction-- irreverent and unglorified; loving and tender; uncomfortable and inconvenient--by a Ukrainian writer currently fighting for his country in Kyiv. Includes the celebrated title story "The Ukraine," which was published in the New Yorker in 2022. The Ukraine is a collection of 26 pieces that deliberately blur the line between nonfiction and fiction, conjuring the essence of a beloved country through its tastes, smells, and sounds, its small towns and big cities, its people and their compassion and indifference, simplicities and complications. In the title story, Chapeye facetiously plays with the English misuse of the article "the" in reference to Ukraine, capturing a country as perceived from the outside, by foreigners. That pseudo-kitsch, often historically shallow, and not-quite-real Ukraine resonates because of its highly engaging and brutally candid snapshots of ordinary lives and typical places. In "One Soul per Home" an elderly woman laments that the men are dying and the young are leaving for the cities, changing the face of her small town;In "The Unscrupulous Spirit of the Provinces," a couple of unspecified gender get stoned and go to church; and in "False Premises," a man romanticizes his younger years working for a Soviet fishing fleet only to reconstruct his nostalgia in the face of Putin's Russia. The Ukraine conveys to readers a place that Chapeye and his countrymen are currently fighting for with their lives. The book features a preface by the author, which he composed on his phone from the front lines.

#ranttime

I have been cussed. I have been told to name a loved one whom I am willing to sacrifice if war escalates. I have been informed that Zelensky was a snake, conniving and very underhanded, and thank goodness, Trump was 10 steps ahead to ward off the evil Zelensky.

I am tired. I gave them a history lesson. I probably didn't change their minds. I then ended with heated sarcasm, we should go ahead and give away Alaska.

Butterfinger It has also been implied that I am a traitor because I am proUkraine and not prowestern North Carolina. Apparently, all funds/aid should go to Hurricane Helene victims, not Los Angeles fires or war ravaged countries. I used to be proud to be an American. 5d
Deblovestoread It is so exhausting! Remember to look for light and joy to refill your cup. 5d
ncsufoxes My husband talked to his mom tonight (he grew up in NC, she still lives there) & he was so fed up. She gets all her info off you know what channel. She changes her views or story to fit the narrative she wants to see. My husband had to go over vaccines again with her tonight because she listens to all the misinformation (he has his PhD in Genetics & Molecular Biology). The parts I heard from her were shocking but not shocking. When she said the 5d

ncsufoxes Velvetta Voldemort loved women I lost it. My husband laughed at her & told her to look up the SAVES Act. She likes to say that, “well it doesn‘t affect me.” My husband tells her but it affects your grandkids & him as an oncology research scientist. It shouldn‘t have to affect you to not be concerned how much other people are hurting. The disillusionment is astounding. 5d
Susanita It‘s the upside down world. Books, podcasts, and friends are the only things keeping me sane. 5d
Jari-chan No words for this. Sending hugs and strength ❤️🫂 5d
DogMomIrene I‘m sorry you‘re being verbally abused. This sounds awful. I get that you‘re trying to educate, but try to protect yourself too. You deserve better than being cussed at. Sending hugs! 5d
Librarybelle So sorry. Thinking of you! 5d
Tamra 😣 I feel like there are many who are a lost cause. 4d
bellabella So you support Ukraine? Because I'm afraid I misread your former blurb. I am very sorry you were cursed and asked which family member you would sacrifice. That was awful on the part of those who hurt you, and they really should take a step back.
However, I am very patriotic of our beautiful country and support some of Trump's works. I will not blame you if you un-follow me.
Thank you for understanding.

Butterfinger @bellabella I am mature enough to know that we can disagree. I hope you are not implying I am not patriotic because I also love this country. The tag #ranttime is for those of us who empathize with everyone who needs help. We feel that because of our love of books, we don't have to explain. So there is no more confusion for you, please block the tag. 4d
Suet624 I heard the exact same lines that you did. Must be a script they use. A best friend of mine and I got into an argument this morning about what was going on. She kept saying at the end of each of her arguments that she didn‘t really care one way or the other because God was going to make sure she was OK. I kept losing it every time she said that. 4d
bellabella @Butterfinger thank you for your answer. My respect for you just went through the roof.
I will continue to follow you because of this and I did not mean to imply that you are not patriotic. For that miscommunication, I am very sorry and offer my most sincere apologies. 💕
