What begins as a late 1970s meet-cute between a girl who is starting over in the city and an ex-hippy locksmith evolves into a very strange, manipulative-yet-endearing romance/psychodrama. John Hersey was an under-appreciated novelist. His prose is tight, beautiful, funny, and precise. When you read it you feel that no matter where the plot goes, your time is being well spent.
