Charles and Emma
Charles and Emma: The Darwins' Leap of Faith | Deborah Heiligman
2 posts | 9 read | 7 to read
Charles Darwin published The Origin of Species, his revolutionary tract on evolution and the fundamental ideas involved, in 1859. Nearly 150 years later, the theory of evolution continues to create tension between the scientific and religious communities. Challenges about teaching the theory of evolution in schools occur annually all over the country. This same debate raged within Darwin himself, and played an important part in his marriage: his wife, Emma, was quite religious, and her faith gave Charles a lot to think about as he worked on a theory that continues to spark intense debates. Deborah Heiligman's new biography of Charles Darwin is a thought-provoking account of the man behind evolutionary theory: how his personal life affected his work and vice versa. The end result is an engaging exploration of history, science, and religion for young readers. Charles and Emma is a 2009 National Book Award Finalist for Young People's Literature.

This novel is a very interesting NF read for anyone interested in evaluation or the story behind Charles Darwin himself. I would use this novel with upper level 8th grade and high school students in an LC to introduce the subject of evolution.

kennedimartin https://images.macmillan.com/media/teachersguides/9780805087215TG.pdf is a great resource for discussion questions to use in the classroom. You can support ESOL 15 by going over the information learned and reviewing main ideas after each chapter. Using UDL 2.1 and 2.2, a teacher can make sure all students are comprehending the information given. #lae3414sp19 5y
ha_kaye I love how you found a book that integrates topics of science into reading! 5y
kelseymccormick @kennedimartin What a great book choice to integrate science and literacy in the classroom. I love your idea of using this book as a hook before teaching the concept of evolution. Good job! 5y
DrSpalding Look at all the beautiful medals on the front of this book! Adding it to my stack. 5y

My current library read that I did not finish despite it's #thoughtprovoking subject matter. I expected this YA book to read like a novel but instead it was dry and dull. I skimmed a bit and I find it fascinating that Charles and his wife had a successful marriage despite the fact that Charles did not believe in God and Emma was faithful in her religious beliefs.
