I bought this for the cover with its Vienna café old school vibes & enjoyed it. A gentle novel about misfits who gather at Simon‘s café from 1966 over the years, it says much about friendship, community & acts of kindness. The small dramas ring true & the city changes over time. Simon is sympathetic & we want him to succeed. He is philosophical about what makes for a good life. We just did a comfort reads ep on the pod, I‘d add this to the list.

Oh I loved it!
Such inquisitive prose that allows you a glimpse of lives and suggestions of the place.
Lively conversation interspersed with inner thoughts and observations on others.
I liked his other two just as much but this is more modern in context.

I do so love Europa for their dedication in publishing the books that are not destined for big bestseller lists, and this book was no exception. It is a gentle tale of community and people finding each other in post-war Vienna. People make connections and fall out of touch, all told against the backdrop of a small cafe in a changing city. An utter delight.

In 1966 Robert Simon opens a market cafe in Vienna. The stories of its staff and customers over the next ten years are small and often sad but always very real.

Robert Seethaler is an auto buy author for me. 👏🏾 If you enjoy understated, spare, quiet, reflective & all those similarly lovely adjectives, you‘ll appreciate his writing style too.

I‘d read The Tobacconist by this author and enjoyed it so when this popped up on NG I thought I‘d give it a try.

This is a quiet, contemplative book, following a number of years in the life of a café, its owner Robert, and many of the customers.

Just a delightful relaxing read - perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon!
