1956, Malibu, California: Something is not right on Paradise Circle. With her name on the Hollywood blacklist and her life on hold, starlet Melanie Cole has little choice in company. There is her next-door neighbor, Elwood, but the screenwriters agoraphobia allows for just short chats through open windows. Hes her sole confidante, though, as she and her housekeeper, Eva, an immigrant from war-torn Europe, rarely make conversation. Then one early morning Melanie and Eva spot Elwoods sister-in-law and caretaker, June, digging in his beloved rose garden. After that they dont see Elwood at all anymore. Where could a man who never leaves the house possibly have gone? As they try to find out if something has happened to him, unexpected secrets are revealed among all three women, leading to an alliance that seems the only way for any of them to hold on to what they can still call their own. But its a fragile pact and one little spark could send it all up in smoke

Quick, engaging read—I couldn‘t wait to see how it ended. I suspected foul play, but was surprised and pleased by the uplifting resolution. Meissner weaves past and present well, though it didn‘t fully wow me. A satisfying story with a hopeful ending.

Susan Meissner had long been a favorite author of mine and, while this book wasn‘t a favorite, it still was pretty good. I haven‘t read a lot set during the Red Scare after WWII and it was interesting to see our three women navigate this strange new world in the already strange land of Hollywood. It has a somewhat satisfying ending but there were a few storylines I wish had wrapped up a little differently. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

During the 1950's Red Scare, a blacklisted actress, WWII survivor, & desperate neighbor bond to keep dark secrets. With everything at stake, they must be clever, resourceful, & trust each other. Riveting & entertaining. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Set during the McCarthy era, we meet three women with different backgrounds and current situations.

They all have secrets - how will they become connected?

Started out slowly for me, but once background information and their predicaments were revealed, I enjoyed a thoughtful, well-researched read. 4/5
