A scintillating debut about a disillusioned tech executive who goes into an obsessive spiral when her best friend-and longtime crushis implicated in a womans death. Edie Walkers life is not going as planned. At thirty-five, she feels stuck: in her career, in her love life, and in her tiny San Francisco studio apartment. It doesnt help that her best friend, Peter Masterson, is basically the ber successful male version of herand shes hopelessly, unrequitedly in love with him. But when Peter breaks up with his girlfriend of seven years, Edie thinks her life might finally be turning around. Hell discover how toxic dating app culture is and realize that Edie has been right for him all along. Except Peter almost immediately lands a date with Anaya Thomas, a gorgeous, whip-smart professor and writer of feminist literature who even Ediereared in the culture of tech brosis smitten by. Unlike the women Peter has dated before, Anaya is like an alternate reality version of Edieone with shampoo commercial hair and a meaningful career, who definitely doesnt spend her weekends scrolling social media alone in her apartment. Its only a matter of time before Peter falls head over heels for this woman; Edie herself is infatuated after one meeting. Then, Anaya is found dead in her apartment. Right after a date with Peter. Driven by her near-fanatic love of Anayas work and a desperate need to prove Peters innocence, Edie begins searching for clues to what really happened that night. As her obsession with the investigation grows, so do her doubts in Peter. When the truth finally comes to light, Edie must decide where her loyalties lie, who deserves justiceand who deserves to be punished. Provocative, tense, and compulsively readable, Nothing Serious is a shrewdly observed, astonishingly heartfelt debut combining a darkly funny takedown of online dating with an honest examination of the challenges women face every daybut dont dare discussfrom a brilliant new voice in contemporary fiction.

Not a vacation read, not a romance, and NOT a romp (although there‘s some witty writing and I flew through it). It‘s a tangle — nay, an outright MESS — of emotions, neuroses, and real traumas. I was mad at so many of the characters for their decisions, and I ached for so many of them at the same time. People have complained about the characters being frustrating and…yes, that‘s kind of the point. 🙈👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: Have you ever met a trash person (or has your country ever been led by one)? Have you ever worried that *you* might not have value? These questions are taken to the extreme and also, in *some* ways…not. 1d
monalyisha 2/2: This is the author‘s debut novel. I‘m impressed by the consideration she took at (nearly) every turn. It‘s an angry story and a sad one, criticizing consumerism, class difference, social media, sexism, rape culture, and the sorry state of healthcare in our country, but it does end with a glimmer of hope.

Content warnings GALORE. The plot hinges on whether or not a woman has died by suicide.

The beginning of this one feels like a 'friend to lover' rom com, until a woman ends up dead. It is not, however, a rom-com or even really a mystery, but more of a feminist coming-of-age story...even though the main character is in her thirties. She is a troubled woman who hates her job and worries about her biological clock and her mother. I did find it very entertaining but found the ending a little rushed. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the ARC. 4/5
