Stars Too Fondly | Emily Hamilton
6 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
In her breathtaking debut--part space odyssey, part sapphic rom-com--Emily Hamilton weaves a suspenseful, charming, and irresistibly joyous tale of fierce friendship, improbable love, and wonder as vast as the universe itself. So, here's the thing: Cleo and her friends really, truly didn't mean to steal this spaceship. They just wanted to know why, twenty years ago, the entire Providence crew vanished without a trace. But then the stupid dark matter engine started all on its own, and now these four twenty-somethings are en route to Proxima Centauri, unable to turn around, and being harangued by a snarky hologram that has the face and attitude of the ship's missing captain, Billie.Cleo has dreamt of being an astronaut all her life, and Earth is kind of a lost cause at this point, so this should be one of those blessings in disguise that people talk about. But as the ship gets deeper into space, the laws of physics start twisting, old mysteries come crawling back to life, and Cleo's initially combative relationship with Billie turns into something deeper and more desperate than either woman was prepared for.Lying somewhere in the subspace between science fantasy and sapphic rom-com, The Stars Too Fondly is a soaring near-future adventure about dark matter and alternate dimensions, leaving home and finding family, and the galaxy-saving power of letting yourself love and be loved.

Finished my first book for #auldlangspine! This wasn‘t on my radar at all as I don‘t read a ton of sci-fi anymore. I thought the characters acted a little young to be in their late 20s. However, I really loved this book and all the characters.

A group of friends break into a defunct spaceship. It takes off and they have to figure out how to survive. Also, romance! Great book!

I was really torn between advancing James or Sorcery and Small Magics in my bracket, but I knew it was a bit of a moot point in the end since The Stars Too Fondly has long since been my favorite book of the year. Doing a book bracket is always such a fun way to track yearly reading. Thanks for putting this one together @CSeydel #BookBracket2024

CSeydel Terrific reading year! 5mo
kspenmoll I was torn between James & Zorrie. In the end, Zorrie won out 5mo

I really thought I knew how my best books for the first half of the year were gonna go and it involved Alexandra Rowland going head to head but then The Stars Too Fondly came in and knocked everything else out of the park! I strongly suspect it will be my favorite book of the year. #topread2024 #readingbracket2024 @CSeydel

peanutnine Ooo now I'm even more intrigued by that one! 👀👀 11mo

Wow wow wow did I love this. A group of twenty-somethings accidentally steal a defunct spaceship when it takes off while they're exploring it. Fortunately the captain from the crew that dissapeared twenty years ago when the dark matter engine first started up uploaded her consciousness to the computer and her AI persona is there to help them. If she and Cleo can stop bickering for 5 seconds, that is. Queer found family space opera at its finest.

julesG Twenty-somethings you say? I thought it was YA and passed it. It goes onto #MountTBR 12mo
rachelsbrittain @julesG I also thought it was YA going in so maybe a marketing issue there, but the protagonists are actually in their late twenties! 12mo
willaful I find it harder and harder to tell what's YA and what's not... 11mo
