This Strange Way of Dying
This Strange Way of Dying: Stories of Magic, Desire and the Fantastic | Silvia Moreno-Garcia
6 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
Spanning a variety of genresfantasy, science fiction, horrorand time periods, Silvia Moreno-Garcia's exceptional debut collection features short stories infused with Mexican folklore yet firmly rooted in a reality that transforms as the fantastic erodes the rational. This speculative fiction compilation, lyrical and tender, quirky and cutting, weaves the fantastic and the horrific alongside the touchingly human. Perplexing and absorbing, the stories lift the veil of reality to expose the realms of what lies beyond with creatures that shed their skin and roam the night, vampires in Mexico City that struggle with disenchantment, an apocalypse with giant penguins, legends of magic scorpions, and tales of a ceiba tree surrounded by human skulls.

4/5

I've been living Silvia Moreno-Garcia's novels, so I was excited to read some of her short stories. Like most short story collections there were a wide variety of stories, and I liked some more than others, but overall it was a great read.

rachelsbrittain I'm glad you liked it! 3y

An incredible collection of speculative short stories from the author of Mexican Gothic. Great range of genres and topics and time periods, usually with a magical or supernatural twist. Stand outs: the title story, Stories with Happy Endings, and Cemetery Man.

My sister @sebrittainclark introduced me to these amazing new Japanese bath soaks and I'm never going back. I had hoped to finish at least one more book this month but its not looking likely-- trying to remember that not something worth being hard on myself over. Besides it just means I get to sit with these gorgeous short stories from SMG a little longer.

Oops I maybe realized I wanted a bunch of fairy tale books for research / inspiration since I've been working on a lot of fairy tale reimaginings lately. But honestly I'm really excited about all of these, especially the Silvia Moreno-Garcia collection 😍

A memorable collection of strange stories. The Mexican folklore and interesting female characters had me hooked.
