An Apple a Day
An Apple a Day: A Memoir of Love and Recovery from Anorexia | Emma Woolf
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
I havent tasted chocolate for over ten years and now Im walking down the street unwrapping a Kit Kat. Remember when Kate Moss said, Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels? Shes wrong: chocolate does. For Christmas Im giving myself a fresh start. I have to get some extra pounds of weight under my belt; I want to make next year the year that everything changes. At the age of 32, after ten years of hiding from the truth, Emma Woolf finally decided it was time to face the biggest challenge of her life. Addicted to hunger, exercise and control, she was juggling a full-blown eating disorder with a successful career, functioning on an apple a day. Having met the man of her dreams (and wanting a future and a baby together), she decided it was time to stop starving and start living. And as if that wasnt enough pressure, Emma also agreed to chart her progress in a weekly column for The Times. Honest, hard-hitting and yet romantic, An Apple a Day is a manifesto for the modern generation to stop starving and start living. This compelling, life-affirming true story is essential reading for anyone affected by eating disorders (whether as a sufferer or ally), anyone interested in health and social issues and for medical and health professionals.

I could just devour memoirs of people recovering from eating disorders forever, I honestly could. Pls drop any fiction or nonfiction recommendations in the comments, I‘m worried about running out!

This wasn‘t the most perfect one Ive read but I enjoyed it lots and she has a great authentic voice and style. She did an amazing job of making her thought processes (which I unfortunately recognise far too well) very understandable

Emilymdxn @8little_paws I have! It‘s actually the one that got me kickstarted on reading books about ppl‘s relationships with their bodies like a vacuum, one of the best memoirs ever imho. Glad you love it too!!! 6y
8little_paws This one isn't about eating disorders but about the body. It's on my tbr 6y

Im enjoying this a lot, but one thing that often annoys me about books is being SO specific about Oxford in a way I often find unnecessary and a little cringy. I went to oxford too and I understand it‘s a beautiful place, but it icks me out for some reason when people have to list all the places everything happened.

Maybe it‘s an ‘i see what you did there‘ reaction because I know I‘m vulnerable to trying to impress ppl with oxford facts too?

I ALWAYS lose count during #24b4monday 😐 but I‘ve read a lot anyway so I feel alright! It‘s really beautiful here finally after the bitterest winter so my boyfriend and I went on a long walk and had a picnic. Came back to his to read and he got this pic of me with my current read.

It‘s so warm and idyllic the idea that I‘ll get up at 7am to go to work tomorrow doesn‘t quite feel real! I love my job but rn I‘m very up for a sunny holiday
