With My Dog Eyes
With My Dog Eyes: A Novel | Hilda Hilst
4 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Hilda Hilst (19302004) was one of the greatest Brazilian writers of the twentieth century, but her books have languished untranslated, in part because of their formally radical nature. This translation of With My Dog-Eyes brings a crucial work from her oeuvre into English for the first time. With My Dog-Eyes is an account of an unravelingof sanity, of language . . . After experiencing a vision of what he calls a clear-cut unhoped-for, college professor Ams Keres struggles to reconcile himself with his life as a father, a husband, and a member of the university with its meetings, asskissers, pointless rivalries, gratuitous resentments, jealous talk, megalomanias. A stunning book by a master of the avant-garde. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Pickpick

A contemporary of Lispector, Hilst was more eccentric in lifestyle and much more experimental in her writing. This novella depicts mathematician Amos Keres‘ decent into incoherent madness. Told completely from his perspective, the only glimpse of plot is from his slight awareness of how people react to him. It is a most unusual book, (it includes a fabulous poem about geometric shapes), but I‘m afraid I did not learn much about Brazil from it.

Texreader Sounds...Ummm...interesting. In trying to find books for Brazil it seems they tend toward the unusual. This one especially. I suppose that is educational in and of itself about Brazil. 3y

sarahbarnes Interesting! 🤓 3y
Butterfinger @Texreader I think you are on to something. I know Coelho twists philosophical truths? in his writing. He's the only Brazilian author that I recognized. Kudos @Liz_M for trying something new. I'm still on the lookout for the other book you wanted. I can't recall the title - really expensive and on the 1000 books list. I thought about thrift stores. I don't know. You have just spiked an interest in me. 3y

“The shortness of life, the dullness of the senses, the numbness of indifference and unprofitable occupations allow us to know but very little. And again and again swift oblivion, the embezzler of knowledge and the enemy of memory, shakes out of the mind, in the course of time, even what we knew.”
