I love Fannie Flagg books… they are like a hug in book form and this was no exception! It was so fun to follow a town and its residents from the founding to present day… if you need a light and easy read, this is the book for you!

I didn't love this one, and the ending was a little vague for my tastes. But I did enjoy the Indigenous spirituality aspect of it. The story follows five generations of Metis women as they struggle with their heritage and generational trauma. There were so many POVs but the audiobook did make it easy to follow with a full cast of narrators. The writing itself was beautifully done

Maali, a war photographer, gambler and closeted gay wakes up in the afterlife after being murdered. He has seven moons to decide between going into the light or staying in this world with other ghosts who are trying to avenge their deaths. He is not as concerned with who killed him, all he wants is his photographs to see the light. I felt lost during certain parts, I knew nothing about Sri Lanka's history or culture and after reading the book ⬇️

nanuska_153 I still don't really know much about it, but it does sound interesting. There's a small attempt at the beginning to explain what the initials to the different factions involved in the war represent, but not detailed enough to learn what it really means, except that everyone is evil. I really loved the parts that were more centered on the characters, because I knew what was going on. ⬇️ 1mo
nanuska_153 I think I'll re-read it once I get a chace to educate myself, because it's clear that the story is much richer than what I could get from the surface with my limited knowledge 1mo
Graywacke Great book. Glad you enjoyed it! 1mo

I‘ve put off reading this book for years. This copy was given to me by someone who said she buys this book at secondhand stores whenever she sees it and hands it out to people to read. I couldn‘t say no upon hearing that. I‘m glad I finally read it as distressing as the murder at the beginning is. It‘s really a book about grief and families. A really good read.

Oh this was sweet.
I needed something light and whilst the subject matter seems full of sadness, it's actually really uplifting and has a sense of happiness and love.
A truly cute little story that offers a different perspective on death.

My next read is another re-read. I think I have a pretty good memory of this one, but we'll see! (Don't mind my phone charger in the way of the picture) #BookElevenOf2025
