I devoured this one. At first I was worried it'd veer into cliche historical territory but the story holds true. A reminder of how far medicine has advanced today: life saving interventions and the ability to practice regardless of gender.

Reading how diphtheria killed children in a slow, choking death, how tetanus spasms were so intense as to break the bones of the inflicted as it took its time to kill, there's no room for anti vaxx sentiments.

I realized that I hadn‘t reviewed this, even though I finished it a few days ago. Easily as good as the first book, it focuses in part on Nora‘s medical training at the university in Bologna and prejudices and hurdles she faced. There‘s also the parallel story line in London, as the doctor who raised her faces medical and financial problems, and her fiancé tries to find solutions. I hope the author writes another book with these characters

tpixie Now THIS is the book I need to move up on MY TBR. I read the 1st and really liked it! 2y
Lynnsoprano @tpixie I rarely read back-to-back books from a series, but I really like these stories. 2y
tpixie @Lynnsoprano that‘s great to hear! 2y

I had to start the sequel to my last read right away, because it left so much hanging. This is easily as good as the first book, and I‘m having trouble putting it down.

Book 141

In The Surgeon's Daughter, Audrey' Blake's second in her series, Nora is at medical school in Italy in the 1800s, trying to complete her studies in record time, annoyingly, so she can return to her love. I really enjoy this series, and I am sad that the next one isn't available yet. However, it felt like this was just following the next chapter of Nora's life with inadequate plot, tension, or character development. 3.5 stars

Easy read.

Suet624 You and I should go on a road trip and just take photos of cloud formations. I remember leaving California after being there a year and being so excited to start seeing clouds again. 2y
Shemac77 Absolutely!! I‘d be all over that! @Suet624 2y
