This debut novel received a lot of pre-publication attention & I was excited for the start to check it out… & now only 5 years later, did it finally come off my listening TBR thanks to the #FictionFaves #GoodreadsChallenge! With a great audio performance by Meryl Streep‘s daughter, Grace Gummer, this tackles statutory abuse & the MeToo movement, making it ripe for discussion. Captures adolescence in 2000 vividly & completely hooked my attention!

Nov 4: Small Towns

Set in upstate New York in the late 60s, this novel follows three teens just waiting to get out. It's the kind of novel that moves so slowly at first, it's like nothing's happening, but Slouka's building to an ending that made me wish it was appropriate to make midnight phone calls to my therapist to discuss book hangovers.
