This was a really lovely middlegrade read. Ellen is on a class trip to Barcelona. She's Jewish, she's autistic, & she has a great dad. But she feels like her best friend is pulling away from her. When they get put on different teams for a group project, she has to learn how to make new friends & set boundaries in her relationships. There's also a new classmate who uses they pronouns, who makes Ellen think outside the binary categories shes used to

I learned a lot from this one about non-binary gender identity and asexuality. Kobabe does an excellent job of conveying the confusion and isolation e felt as e was coming of age. The art is beautiful.

The author accounts eir personal journey of queer discovery which could serve to explain gender dysphoria both to people on the outside or those who may be experiencing it without understanding. Man did the mom tick me off, not just on the pronouns, on many things. It kind of just ends randomly. But it‘s a memoir & I guess we are all in progress & evolving so …I‘ll take it for what it is.

What a wild ride. Political upheaval, rebellion led by a tyrant's children, genetic engineering, fanciful creatures, non-binary characters. It was everything. #QueerBC @PuddleJumper #LitsyAtoZ I used the author's name @Texreader

Amiable Oh, I read this one last year! It‘s an incredibly open and honest account of life and sexuality. Definitely recommend. 👍🏼 2w
Kenyazero This is a really good read. For anyone who wants to learn more about gender diversity or asexuality, or who wants to read a book by a bookish artist, this is excellent. 2w

(2024) Fifth in the author's “Singing Hills“ series of novellas about a traveling, storytelling cleric. There's not a dud among 'em, and this is a strong addition to the series. All five enthusiastically recommended.

A thoughtful exploration of identity, in the form of a beautiful graphic novel. Ash‘s story about finding their grandpa‘s secret cabin in the woods, and their attempt at starting a new life of their own far from family and friends had me shedding tears. 😭

A bit late, but my favourite book from April was The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo, the latest fantasy novella about a nonbinary, story-collectimg monk who travels to an ancient estate for a wedding. There are shades of Bluebeard here, but not all is as it seems! I loved this horror-tinged story, but I think We Are Okay by Nina LaCour was more emotionally resonant for me, so that's the winner in that bracket. #ReadingBracket2025
