White is for Witching | Helen Oyeyemi
post image

Barely on page 10 and I have no idea what‘s going on except that I love the writing. The personification of words- like “please” is a kid in someone‘s mouth acting like a petulant child saying,”I don‘t wanna!!” Which for the word please itself is hilarious. And the impatient words on the bottom are a group of people who had been trapped in an elevator. Lol @Centique #WIFWBuddyRead

Billypar When I started reading Oyeyemi last year, she vaulted into my inner circle of favorite authors. That feeling of being pleasantly disoriented is one of the reasons I like her. You understand more as you proceed, but never too much so that it ruins the magical quality. 4y
Josee.lit.a.lu.et.lira O! My kind of love for wordplay 🥰 4y
readordierachel Yay! I loved this one. So glad you're enjoying it! 4y

Reggie @Josee.a.lu.lit.et.lira Good to know there are others!😁 4y
Reggie @Billypar @readordierachel it‘s funny. I can read romance and don‘t feel bad about reading sex scenes but there are times I‘m reading about Eliot and Miri and Lily or with their dad and I feel like I‘m watching an extremely private family moment I have no business being a part of. Did ya‘ll ever feel that way? Still loving all that is Oyemi. -Reggie 4y
Billypar I think I know what you mean, though my memory is so poor for specific examples of anything I read over a month ago, lol. But one thing I admire about Oyeyemi's work is she can capture the essence of a small, intimate moment beautifully, even though none of her work would be classified as realism. It exists between realism and fantasy without feeling like either mode is compromised. 4y
readordierachel Yeah, I can see that. It's a very intimate book. I really need to read more of her. 4y
